Research Technician

Bristol Area, United Kingdom

Job Description

The role

The Bristol Vaccine Centre Immunology Group are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and hard-working Research Technician, to assist with human mucosal immunology research and vaccine clinical trials. The overarching aim of our research programme is to develop a deeper understanding of the immunology of infection, to inform the development and use of vaccines, with a particular focus on respiratory mucosal immunity. We are undertaking several research projects that employ an array of immunological lab methodologies mostly using human samples such as blood, saliva and tonsils. The appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to several projects. Training will be provided by senior members of the group, including an experienced Senior Laboratory Technician. Our research group encourages a culture of scientific curiosity and learning, with regular meetings to present and discuss data.

What will you be doing?

  • Sample receipt, logging, storage (including -80oC and liquid nitrogen) and maintenance of records in compliance with the Human Tissue Act
  • Isolation of mononuclear cells from peripheral blood, and other samples such as tonsils
  • Assisting with immunological techniques such as cell culture, ELISA and flow cytometry
  • Maintaining the day-to-day running of the laboratory, e.g. consumable stocks and equipment
You should apply if
  • You have previous experience of working in a laboratory environment (e.g. academia, NHS, industry), and ideally some experience of working with human samples.
  • Knowledge/experience of immunological laboratory techniques, e.g. peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation and cell culture, is desirable (although training will be offered)
  • You have excellent communication skills and are a team player.
  • There may be a need to work later sometimes to process samples collected at study clinics and therefore some flexibility to adjust hours according to operational needs is required.
  • Applicants can discuss the post with the team prior to application, and if shortlisted, applicants are encouraged to arrange a visit to the laboratory before the interview
