The Joulia lab is looking for a Research Technician following the award of a Wellcome Trust Career Development to investigate the impact of mast cell activation on the vasculature during chronic lung diseases.
During previous projects, we discovered that mast cells (MCs), a type of immune cell, play a vital role during vascular inflammation. The importance of this interaction in the lungs, where MCs are abundant, remains to be investigated. The project, combining mouse models, human samples, spatial transcriptomics, and 3D analysis of lung tissue requires a motivated and enthusiastic Research Technician.
You will play a pivotal role in the lab by providing a range of technical support to our research programme. You will work in close collaboration with the PI and other members of the lab.
What you would be doing
---------------------------
Your key responsibilities will encompass supporting ongoing experiments in the lab (e.g. genotyping transgenic colonies, sampling of the airways, tissue preparation and RNA and DNA preparation), general laboratory administrative duties including ordering when needed.
You will be performing advanced imaging analysis using Imaris software to analyse lung tissues. In addition, you will have the opportunity to present findings to colleagues and at national/international conferences and publish in high-quality refereed journals. Participation in relevant workshops and conferences, along with the development of contacts and research collaborations within the College and wider community, will further enrich your role.
Furthermore, you will actively contribute to the reputation of the Group, Department, and College, and play a key role in writing grant proposals to secure funding for the research program. Engaging in the research program of the group, attending, and contributing to group research meetings and internal seminars, and assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students and technicians as required are integral parts of this role.
Lastly, compliance with the College, Division, and Unit safety practices and attendance of safety courses as appropriate will be essential for maintaining a safe working environment. Any other duties deemed reasonable by the Head of the group, as well as Head of Division/Department/Section, may also be assigned.
What we are looking for
---------------------------
Education: Candidates for this position should have a good first degree and preferentially a MSC degree.
Experience: You should have some prior experience in an academic laboratory performing in vivo work.
Knowledge: Candidates should have basic knowledge of lung biology and respiratory disorders such as asthma.
Skills & Abilities: The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to conduct simple experiments such as PCR and have a creative approach to problem-solving. They should be adept at developing and applying new concepts. Strong verbal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with a diverse range of individuals, are important.
What we can offer you
-------------------------
The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to use science for humanity.
Benefit from a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days' annual leave and generous pension schemes).
