Breakaway provides short breaks ranging from day care to overnight stays for children and young people with learning difficulties and disabilities.


As a Residential Child Care Officer, you'll ensure when the children and young people are in our care, they're provided with a safe and secure environment in which to develop their skills.


You'll work within a team providing activities and opportunities which stimulate the children and young people, and encourage, where possible, some independence. You'll also provide personal care.

Main Accountabilities

Contribute to the provision of a safe, appropriate and stimulating environment for the care of children and young people with learning difficulties and disabilities Plan shifts that ensure tasks are completed, maintaining a record of shift commitments and working co-operatively with colleagues to preserve an efficient service Support children and young people by showing an awareness of their individual interests and preferences, by introducing them to a range of different experiences and enabling them to make informed choices wherever possible Attend and actively participate in meetings when required. To be responsible for bringing relevant issues to the attention of your colleagues/supervisor Understand and operate the employer's policies and procedures for the administration of medication including storage, disposal and recording Account for children and young people's and the department's monies in accordance with policies and procedures including the accurate recording of all transactions Be responsible for preparing care plans, risk assessments and reports using the IT system, file maintenance and other administrative tasks in a timely manner Ensure information is stored securely Understand and operate the employer's policies and procedures for the administration of medication including storage, disposal and recording Actively participate in supervision and appraisal processes Attend all mandatory training along with any other training that facilitates best outcomes for our children and young people Ensure the safeguarding of children/young people in line with your role and responsibilities Undertake any other duties as requested in accordance with the level of responsibility of the role Adhere to all company policies and procedures Adhere to all legislation in terms of practice, policies and procedures for your role

Person Specification

Education, Training & Experience

Educated to GCSE level or the equivalent

(Essential)

Hold a certificate in Children and Young People's Workforce Diploma Level 3 with Social Care Pathway or the equivalent.

(Desirable)

Access to a car and full clean driving licence

(Desirable)

Enhanced DBS

(Essential)

Experience of working and supporting young people with learning difficulties/disabilities.

(Essential)

Experience of preparing care plans, completing risk assessments and writing reports.

(Desirable)

Experience of handling petty cash transactions.

(Desirable)

General & Specific Knowledge

Knowledge of relevant legislation i.e. Children's Homes regulations including the Quality Standard April 2015

Knowledge of children's safeguarding and child protection Ability to work with staff at all levels, working as part of a team, other professionals and outside agencies.

(Essential)

Have the flexibility to work on a shift basis including Bank Holidays, weekends, waking nights and sleep-ins.

Ability to work within a challenging and changing environment.

(Essential)

Ability to assess and evaluate the individual needs of young people and their families.
