Job Description


The purpose of this post is to develop learning opportunities by providing teaching and support for students on the Peninsula Medical School BMBS Programme during their Respiratory placements. The post will predominantly provide teaching and support to year 3 students. There will be some teaching and support of year 5 medical students but teaching for students in other years may be required. The post holder will work with Dr Derry and the Clinical Liaison Team in the Medical School to support teaching in Respiratory medicine. This will include teaching groups of 3 to 5 students on Respiratory placements in a variety of clinical areas, assessing clinical competencies, providing tutorials, delivering clinical skills teaching and developing teaching resources. Other activities related to the smooth running of the pathway weeks and placement blocks may be included. Teaching will be during academic term time and as such the post holder is required to take annual leave during the medical student holidays.
Main duties of the job
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The post holder will support Dr. Derry and the Clinical Liaison Team in delivering high-quality undergraduate Respiratory education to Peninsula Medical School students at Plymouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the main clinical liaison for students during placements.
  • Coordinating and enhancing Respiratory Pathway Week teaching by working with Clinical Teacher Leads and clinical teams.
  • Teaching practical and clinical skills in both clinical and simulated settings.
  • Leading and developing departmental teaching during pathway weeks.
  • Collaborating with nurses, junior doctors, senior staff, and others to support the BMBS programme.
  • Delivering tutorials, lectures, clinical skills, and simulation sessions, both in-person and remotely.
  • Participating in ward and multidisciplinary rounds to support teaching.
  • Assisting with quality assurance of clinical teaching as directed by the Pathway Lead.
  • Attending Clinical Teacher Leads Meetings and other Medical School working groups as needed.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will comply with all local policies including dress code. Annual and study leave will be in line with local trust policy. Other than in exceptional circumstances, leave will be taken only during medical student holidays. It is anticipated these duties and hours will be undertaken across Tuesday to Friday. Specific work patterns will be agreed with candidates following successful interview. The successful applicants will all be key members of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team and will take responsibility for supporting clinical learning within the clinical environment.
Successful post holders may have the option to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCert) or equivalent appropriate Postgraduate Certificate (e.g. Simulation and Patient Safety or Health Leadership and Management), which is funded up to a maximum of xc2xa33,500 by the Peninsula Medical School. Generally, this will be done through the University of Plymouth.
Doctors who are enthusiastic about working within Medical Education and delivering excellent teaching opportunities to students will be rewarded with a wide and rewarding medical educational and clinical teaching experience. Post holders will also be given an honorary title from the University of Plymouth.
There may be opportunities for successful applicants to undertake research or quality improvement projects with clinicians within the Respiratory department.
The Medical School will run a series of Wednesday afternoon sessions throughout the year with all Teaching Fellows as a development and support opportunity.
Flexibility is required for some teaching sessions the role may require occasional early starts and evening sessions with notice. You will receive time off in lieu.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practise and up to date with revalidation.
  • Certificate of completion of Foundation Training +/- further training.
  • Minimum 2 full years NHS experience in the UK as a doctor, a year of which must be in the last 2 years.
  • A sound knowledge of basic clinical sciences and the ability to apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Experience of teaching in any setting.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of the Peninsula Medical School and experience of teaching BMBS students
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent.
Desirable
  • PG Cert & desire to work towards.
