This micro internship is for 30 hours in total (including 4 hours for training) and is aimed at students who have limited professional prior work experience and are looking for an opportunity that supports them to develop their employability skills.

As stated above, the GROW Your Future Micro Internship Scheme aims to support students with limited professional work experience, therefore priority will be given to students who meet this criteria. This includes students who may have already completed a GYF micro internship.
This micro-internship offers a hands-on opportunity to help strengthen a culture of risk management and safety within the University's Student & Education Services (SES) Division. You'll work with University staff to raise awareness of health and safety responsibilities, share resources and support colleagues in assessing risks for activities like student registration, events and residentials.
Your work will help ensure colleagues understand:

• Who is responsible for risk assessment and control.
• What types of activities require a risk assessment.
• What a good-quality risk assessment looks like and where to find examples.
• How to get support with risk assessing significant risks.
• Why it matters to check that controls are implemented, and review lessons learned after events.

This role would suit someone who enjoys research and structured thinking, has an interest in health and safety or event management, and wants to gain experience in how large organisations manage risk and assurance. The internship offers valuable experience in project delivery, collaboration and communication within a Professional Services environment.
About the Division:
SES is one of the University's central Professional Services Divisions. It is organised into three main service areas: Education Services, Student Wellbeing Services and Careers and Employability. SES teams coordinate central services and processes that support students throughout their time at the University and work closely with Academic Departments, Faculties, Colleges and other Professional Services Divisions to enhance the student experience. SES supports a wide range of activities and events, where thoughtful risk assessment ensures they run smoothly and safely. This project will help strengthen a consistent safety culture across SES by supporting colleagues to understand their responsibilities, share good practice and manage risk with confidence
Start Date: 24th November 2025
End Date: 31st January 2026
Interview Date: 17th November 2025
Working Pattern: Flexible, approximately 5 hours per week
Location: On Campus

• Review a sample of existing risk assessment materials.
• Research training and resources available at Lancaster University to support risk assessment and management.
• Example slides or infographics to raise awareness of risk assessment responsibilities at staff meetings.
• Produce a short summary of your findings, recommendations and learning.
• Present your work to your line manager and, where appropriate, the SES Safety, Health & Wellbeing (SHaW) Operational Committee for feedback.
• Develop draft resources such as:

• A short guide showing what a good risk assessment looks like.
• A basic visual, mapping where responsibilities and accountabilities for risk assessment sit within SES.
• A simple annual calendar for key risk assessment activities and responsible leads in SES.

You'll be supported throughout the project to build your understanding of health and safety processes and to apply this knowledge in a practical, meaningful way.
