About the role


------------------


Department of Computing is looking to recruit a proactive and experienced Robotics Research Engineer. The postholder will enable cutting-edge research to be carried out within the departmental robotics facilities, maintain advanced robotic systems including humanoid platforms, manipulator arms, and multi-fingered robot hands, and provide training and technical support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral staff in robotics and robot learning applications.


What you would be doing

The staff member will be required:


To enable excellence in robotics research by providing expertise in the operation and maintenance of advanced robotic systems To manage the day-to-day operations of the robotics research facility, facilitating access and ensuring optimal performance of robotic platforms To be responsible for ensuring systems are in place for safety, and to ensure comprehensive training is provided so users can operate robotic systems safely and effectively To support research associates and PhD students in the use of robotic platforms, ROS 2 systems, and robot learning methodologies To conduct applied research on robotic system integration, platform optimisation, and robot learning implementation, in collaboration with departmental colleagues and/or manufacturers To keep up-to-date with developments in robotics hardware, software ecosystems (particularly ROS 2), and robot learning methodologies through attendance at appropriate workshops and conferences To have primary responsibility for all robotic platforms within the facilities, and secondary responsibility for related computational infrastructure To liaise with external stakeholders (other Departments, robot manufacturers, software vendors, industrial collaborators etc.) Ensure that appropriate processes and systems are established and maintained to provide effective access to the robotic facilities for researchers who require them, and that any required charge-out or other financial and administrative considerations are managed and carried out appropriately and in accordance with College and departmental policies.

What we are looking for

Successful candidate will have a first degree (or equivalent) or MSc (or equivalent) in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or equivalent technical discipline as well as an extensive practical experience with robotic systems in research or industrial environments.



We are looking for someone with hands-on experience with humanoid robotic platforms (preferably Unitree H1/G1 or similar systems), practical experience with robotic manipulator arms (preferably Franka robots or equivalent industrial/research platforms), multi-fingered robot hands, and legged robots and experience with robotic simulation environments (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or similar).



We want to hear from you if you also have facility management experience in a research or industrial robotics environment and could demonstrate experience with safety protocols and risk management for robotic systems.
