Job summary
The People and Training Directorate, led by Director People & Training (Dir P&T), is responsible for attracting, recruiting, training, sustaining and retaining inspired, capable and motivated people in an agile and flexible Whole Force to enable the Royal Navy to succeed on operations by putting our people capability first.
The Directorate therefore spans a multitude of both policy, functional and delivery areas. This includes the various training establishments, people and training strategy, and the full breadth of traditional HR functions including recruitment and attraction, remuneration, workforce planning and talent management. There are distinct teams too, such as the Royal Navy Office of Protocol, the Nuclear Faculty and Royal Navy Police HQ. The Directorate also incorporates the Chaplaincy, Legal and Healthcare functions to deliver the full gamut of people business.
The Directorate has undergone a number of major change programmes which focused on delivering the P&T Strategy to ensure the whole force can: Join Well, Train Well, Work Well, Live Well, and Leave Well. To enable this, the organisation is structured to ensure it runs well, embraces an innovative culture, and drives digital and technological advancement to improve our people analytics and insights.

Physical Development is a key component of RN People Support which has the departmental objective to strengthen and enhance the resourcefulness and resilience of RN personnel and their families.

Job description
RN Physical Development programmes contribute significantly to the development and sustainability of the Moral Component of Operational Capability by delivering individuals who are mentally and physically robust with a high degree of war-fighting spirit; they also make a substantial contribution to the maintenance of high morale. Sport also contributes to fitness, teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, determination, co-ordination, courage, competitive spirit, individual and collective resilience, and consequently military ethos. Inextricably linked to operational efficiency, authorised sport is a Condition of Service with duty status and is a core activity that cannot be considered discretionary.
In support of Dir P &T/People Support objectives, the Sports Development Officer (SDO) is the staffing focal point and lead for growing participation from grassroots to elite level in support of all RN Sports associations. Additionally, the role is responsible for assisting collating and publishing data on trends in participation and other relevant Management Information (MI). Under the management of Deputy Head of Navy Sport (LM) and Head of Navy Sport (CSO), the SDO is responsible for maximising participation in all groups who are underrepresented across the Sports Continuum, whether as participant, coach or official. In collaboration with the RN Sport Team, PTs and other stakeholders, SDO Participation will develop a coherent strategy to identify minority groups, establish targeted interventions and monitor and report participation trends through supporting, planning, developing and facilitation of pathways in various sports.

Experience of line management, preferably with both civilian and contracted staff.
Range of coaching/instructional qualifications across the 47 recognised sports.
