Salary: 35,000 - 37,500 based on competency module attainment.



Hours: 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday, with occasional out of hours working and overtime required



Location: Various (across the Supertram network)



We are currently recruiting a bogey/lathe operative to carry out maintenance, overhaul, repair, and machining activities on rolling stock bogies and wheelsets, ensuring all work is performed to the required safety, quality, and operational standards. The role combines specialist mechanical fitting with the operation of wheel lathe equipment, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of passenger rolling stock.

Duties include:

Disassemble, inspect, overhaul, and reassemble tram bogies and wheelsets in accordance with maintenance schedules and technical specifications. Replace or refurbish mechanical components such as bearings, axles, springs, dampers, brakes, and suspension units. Document all work carried out, ensuring full traceability and quality control. Operate the underfloor wheel lathe to reprofile tram wheels, restoring correct tread and flange profiles. Maintain and clean wheel lathe and bogie build equipment, carrying out first-line maintenance as required.
Person Specification:

Willingness to learn mechanical fitting skills, with exposure to heavy engineering and/or the rail industry. Keen to develop skills in operating manual wheel lathes and other large-scale machining equipment (full training provided). Openness to learning how to read and follow technical drawings and work instructions. Awareness of the importance of safety and working safely, with training provided on PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, and railway-specific regulations. Eagerness to gain experience using precision measuring tools such as micrometres, Verniers, gauges, and torque wrenches. Ability to work well in a team, communicate effectively, and contribute to a multi-skilled engineering environment. Strong attention to detail and right first time and a commitment to developing high-quality workmanship.*

Experience & Qualifications:

Strong numeracy and literacy skills (Maths and English) to support measuring, interpreting instructions, and completing documentation. Formal engineering qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2) is desirable but not essential. Previous experience in engineering, maintenance, or similar industries is Desirable. Training in wheel lathe operation and bogie overhaul will be provided although previous experience desirable. Knowledge of railway maintenance standards is desirable but not required.
