The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Imperial College London is a world leading centre for teaching and research. We wish to recruit a Safety Officer to support our Departmental Safety Manager in providing support and advice to staff and students. As Safety Officer, you will be involved in the development of policies surrounding best practice and monitoring overall departmental safety procedures through inspection and audit. This is an exciting opportunity ideally suited to an individual familiar with a teaching, research or industrial environment who is keen to develop their skills in a safety focused role.
What you would be doing

You will organise and conduct safety inspections and audits, maintain records, and ensure timely follow-up on identified issues.
You will provide expert health and safety advice, supporting the development and review of risk assessments and safety documentation.
You will support safe laboratory operations, including equipment procurement, testing, maintenance, and waste management.
You will investigate incidents, manage reports, and serve as Laser Safety Officer and Radiation Protection Officer when needed.
You will lead on the design and delivery of safety training and inductions, and support staff and students in using health and safety systems and services.
You will contribute to developing local safety policies in line with Imperial's regulations and legislative requirements.
What we are looking for
---------------------------
You should have a BTEC/HNC, recognised apprenticeship, or equivalent experience. A National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety would be considered an advantage.
Experience of actively supporting the day-to-day Health and Safety operations in a professional setting is essential.
Experience of record keeping and safety administration is essential.
You should have experience in reviewing procedures and writing relevant reports for management and general information.
A basic knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation is essential for this role.
Experience working in a Mechanical Engineering research environment is desirable.
Knowledge of specific physical, chemical, physiological and biological hazards and their control measures is beneficial.
