PURPOSE OF THE POST



The Lyric Theatre's Scenic Workshop opened in 2021 to deliver set construction for Lyric Theatre Productions. We work with some of the leading designers working in theatre today to realise their visions on the Lyric Stage. We have since expanded our operations to take on external work, building sets for theatre companies across the whole island of Ireland and the UK.

We are looking to build our roster of freelance contractors across all scenic disciplines including (but not limited to) carpentry, metal work / welding, fabrication, moulding, plastics and scenic art. Most of the work will be carried out in the workshop in Mallusk, however occasional work in the theatre spaces will also be required.

Casual staff are engaged on a per show basis, typically being rota'd for a period of 2-4 weeks at a time, depending on the size of the job. Staff will be engaged on a project based on their skillset and its relevance to the given job.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with the construction sets. Tasks will depend on the set in question, but common tasks include:

o Use of table saws, chopsaws, routers, handtools, drills etc.

o Constructing simple structures under the direction of the lead/deputy carpenter.

o Interpreting drawings produced by the lead carpenter/draftsperson and marking up sets/materials.

o Manual handling of set pieces/materials.

o Assisting scenic carpenters or metalworkers with more complex tasks.

o Assisting scenic artists with painting, sculpting, breakdown etc.

Assist the team with loading/unloading set and materials both into and out of the workshop.

Assist the team with the unloading and fit-up of sets in performance spaces.

Assist the team with the deconstruction and load-out of sets from performance spaces.

Assist the deputy carpenter with reclaiming materials and storing previously used sets.

Maintaining a clean and safe working environment by tidying the workshop when necessary.

Personal Specification



Essential Criteria



Demonstrable experience in scenic construction, carpentry, metalwork, fabrication, prop making, stage technical or scenic art.

Experience and proficiency using powered hand tools such as impact drivers and drills.

Good practical numeracy skills.

Good spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination.

Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills.

Fitness and stamina to fulfil the requirements of the post.

Strong collaborator who supports colleagues and contributes to a positive team culture.

Comfortable using initiative within delegated authority.

Ability to follow instruction and adapt to changing plans.

Desirable Criteria



Experience of using bench machinery, such as table/chop saws.

Familiarity with sustainable practices and Theatre Green Book principles.

Ability to work at height.

Full clean driving licence.

MEWP or IPAF Licence

Basic understanding of theatrical rigging.

Basic understanding of theatrical lighting and theatre practices.

Pay: 13.75 per hour
