School Caretaker/site Manager

Amble, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Site Manager - King Edwin Primary School & Barndale by the Sea required from December 2025 or as soon thereafter

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, supportive, and adaptable individual to take on the challenge of shaping and developing the role of Site Manager across two schools who share one site.

In September 2024, King Edwin Primary School and Barndale by the Sea opened their doors at South Avenue. We are seeking a dedicated and proactive professional to oversee and manage the site on behalf of both schools.

About the Role

As Site Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the effective management, maintenance, security, and health and safety of both schools. You'll have day-to-day responsibility for the careful use of school facilities and equipment, ensuring the site remains safe and welcoming for our pupils, staff, visitors, and contractors. In this unique position, you will lead and support a team of cleaning staff, maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety across both sites. You will report directly to one Headteacher but hold a duty of care and responsibility to the Headteachers of both schools.

Key Responsibilities

Manage and maintain the school premises to ensure a safe, secure, and well-presented environment. Oversee cleaning operations and site maintenance, including the coordination of third-party contractors. Monitor and manage health and safety compliance, carrying out risk assessments and ensuring best practice. Act as a keyholder for both schools, managing site access and emergency response procedures. Undertake minor repairs, cleaning, site maintenance, and the safe handling of equipment and chemicals. Support school activities and events, assisting with logistics, setup, and occasional unsociable hours when required.

About You

You'll bring practical experience in a similar caretaking, facilities, or site management role and a hands-on, solution-focused approach to problem-solving.

A Health and Safety qualification is desirable, though not essential -- we will support the right candidate in completing a recognised course. A strong working knowledge of health and safety procedures in a school or caretaking environment is important. You'll be flexible, dependable, and ready to respond to emergencies or unforeseen issues at short notice.
The role is physically active and varied -- from managing firefighting and water safety systems to clearing leaves, snow, and supporting community events. Above all, you'll take pride in your work, ensuring our schools are safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environments for everyone who uses them.

Working Pattern: 35 hours per week on a split shift basis. Term time plus 25 days. The postholder may be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, and unsociable hours to support school events, emergencies or maintenance needs.
