Cancer Grand Challenges are looking for a science communications professional to join the team and build the Cancer Grand Challenges brand through delivering compelling content about the science we fund, its impact and the people that make it possible


About the team



Cancer Grand Challenges is a global funding initiative founded in 2020 by the two largest funders of cancer research in the world: Cancer Research UK and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the US ( www.cancergrandchallenges.org ).


Cancer Grand Challenges builds on the success of CRUK's Grand Challenge that launched in 2015 - to date we have committed in excess of c$400m to fund 16 interdisciplinary teams, and our portfolio now includes over 1200 researchers and collaborators across 16 countries. We recently launched our fifth call for applications to address seven new challenges, and we are thinking about what the next decade for the initiative will look like. So, this is an exciting time to join the team.


In this role you will join a small but growing team of marketing and communication professionals that support and deliver on all aspects of CGCs brand. As a Science Content Manager you'll work across multiple channels, such as writing for webpages, , presentations, meeting materials and engaging event experiences; you'll also support in our income generation through partners and philanthropy by writing for webpages, , presentations, meeting materials and engaging event experiences.


When you work at Cancer Grand Challenges, you'll be employed by Cancer Research UK.


What will I be doing?

Developing in-depth knowledge of Cancer Grand Challenge's research portfolio and keeping up to date with the latest developments from our teams; Translating complex scientific information into engaging content to inspire diverse audiences to get involved with Cancer Grand Challenge's mission; Creating a range of content deliverables across multiple channels that bring our brand story to life. This will include writing for webpages, , presentations, meeting materials and engaging event experiences; Lead on the development of engaging content to help support Cancer Grand Challenges plans for raising income through partners and philanthropy. This includes fundraising materials, pitch documents, funding applications and communications for donor events; Support the stewardship of existing partners and donors including donor reports, communications to donors and material to illustrate the scientificimpact of the teams they fund; Owning our initiative's science stories, including building and maintaining a repository of our initiative's research findings, impact and people, in order to inform engaging content for various audiences in collaboration with comms and fundraising colleagues; and Building close working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders, gaining clear insight into the specific requirements and priorities of different audiences.

What are you looking for?

Excellent scientific knowledge essential. A higher degree (PhD or MSc) in biomedical or related field desirable. Proven ability to translate and communicate science content for multiple audiences. Understanding of writing compelling stories and content for a specialist audience (specifically funding partner and philanthropic audience) Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret and explain complex information with a creative flair; Significant experience of managing projects, with ability to develop and deliver complex plans and deliver multiple tasks to competing deadlines and prioritise effectively; Strong experience of building relationships with stakeholders internally and externally, judging situations and acting diplomatically to influence effectively and build consensus; and
