Start Date: Immediate start available



Full Time - Term Time 37 hours per week

Term Time only 195 days (to include 5 Training days)

Monday - Thursday 08:30 - 16:30, Friday 08:30 -16:00

Sixth Form College Support Pay Scale P3 to P6 24,759 to 25,558 per annum

pro-rata 21,326 to 22,014 per annum

Job Purpose



To provide technical support to the Health Science faculties: Applied Science, Biology, Chemistry, Health & Social Care and Medical Science. and to assist in the preparation, organisation and maintenance of materials and resources within these faculties.

Accountability:



In the first instance, the role holder will report to the Curriculum Leader of Science.

The main duties and responsibilities attached to the post will be:

Preparing and setting out the materials, solutions, specimens and apparatus required for practical work. Setting up and testing demonstration experiments and ensuring that they work satisfactorily.

Cleaning of equipment and glassware used by teaching staff and students.

To provide support in the classroom to both teachers and students during experiments when able to do so and to provide class demo's when requested.

Maintaining apparatus and equipment in good working order, carrying out repairs where possible, and reporting items for repair/replacement as necessary. The construction or modification of apparatus within the capabilities of the technician for departmental use or for student investigations.

Maintaining and disposing of solutions (and waste) in accordance with statutory guidelines for hazardous substances.

The maintenance and upkeep of the departmental laboratories, preparation and storage rooms, advising on any improvements which may be made in this respect.

Operating an efficient system for storing, transporting and distributing all items used in the department and operation of departmental documentation systems (photocopying, cataloguing, filing, worksheets, receipt and issuing of materials etc.).

Maintaining stock control systems within the department, to include ordering and recording of stock levels and keeping records of expenditure, under the direction of your line manager and fellow technicians.

Check chemicals and apparatus when delivered by suppliers and advise on missing and damaged items.

Assist teaching staff as directed in the preparatory work for examinations, and to carry out simple fabrication or preparation of teaching aids and displays. Including invigilating within the department when needed in the busy exam period.

Relief laboratory technician duties within health sciences, to cover staff absences and to support the other technician during periods of increased workloads or intense experiments.

To assist in Open Evenings throughout the year within the Health Sciences department.

To assist with planning and attending trips within the Health Sciences department.

To be an active member of the First Aid Team including an active member of the rota, undertaking a First Aid qualification to provide first response where necessary.
To be aware of fire safety within the department.

To keep up to date with the teaching programmes in the Science Faculty to anticipate the need for experiments and practical lessons.

To be fully aware of safe working practice in the handling of chemicals and apparatus as laid down in the COSHH regulations, checking CLEAPPS guidance also.

To check and update the equipment and chemical inventory on an annual basis.

To edit the laboratory experiment books for students and send for binding at the end of each year

To develop practices/techniques and risk assessments for experiments.

To support/advise teachers on best methods/techniques to use in experiments - to include the editing and making of scientific methods when requested.
