The School
The School of Medicine and Biosciences (SMB) encompasses a broad range of expertise allowing it to deliver undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, Biochemistry and related subjects, as well as MSc courses in Dementia Studies, Person Centred Care, and Bioinformatics, and a range of PhDs. Recruitment for the first cohort of undergraduates began in 2019, and the School has invested in state of the art laboratories and other teaching and research facilities to allow us to deliver excellence in teaching and to pursue cutting edge research.
The Role
The time will be split between research and teaching activities with the School of Medicine and Biosciences, including supporting PhD students, academics, final year research project students and undergraduate practicals.
To actively assist research activities in particular during 'non-teaching' periods.
To assist PhD students and academics within the school as needed, including common microbiology, molecular and cell biology techniques such as PCR, cell culture, and RNA and DNA isolation, as well as helping with general lab activities such as sample storage, equipment maintenance.
To attend training courses for the use of specialist equipment as necessary.
To assist with teaching in the School of Medicine and Biosciences through provision of support for practical sessions including the preparation of teaching labs before the session, supporting the teaching staff during the practical, helping clear the lab after each session.
To prepare materials for practical-based teaching including reagents, agarose and acrylamide gels, and cell and microbe cultures.
To help maintain stocks of key reagents by reordering as necessary, and to maintain equipment through tracking service contracts and arranging onsite servicing and repairs as necessary.
Operate and manage laboratory waste disposal systems, including the use of an autoclave
Ensure a clean safe and organised laboratory environment.
The Person
In addition to holding a BSc degree in a relevant area, you will also have:
Knowledge and experience of key microbiology, molecular and cell biology techniques including basic microbiology, cell culture, PCR, western blotting, DNA/RNA extraction, RT-PCR
Experience of working in a research lab and supporting teaching activities
Experience in ordering lab reagents
Ability to work safely in a lab and perform common lab tasks related to microbiology, cell and molecular biology
Good communication skills, to be able to communicate with staff, students and suppliers clearly and appropriately
Good organizational skills
Good time management skills and an ability to meet deadlines (for example, to have preparation for practical sessions completed on time)
