Position: Scientific Officer - Lough Neagh Conservation Management Plan
Pay Rate: 17.43 per hour
Hours: Full time, 37 hours
The successful candidate will normally be required to work5 days each week, totalling 37 hours (excluding lunch break).On occasions the duties may include some evening and weekend working. DAERA operates a flexi working system
Duration: Until 25/01/2026, with possibility of extension
Start Date: ASAP
Location: These posts are based in Clare House, 303 Airport Road West, Belfast, BT3 9ED.
Application of the NICS Hybrid Working Policy may involve a mixture of home and office working by agreement with management.
Job Duties:
This post will support the scientific development and delivery of the Lough Neagh Conservation Management Plan by assisting with evidence collation, ecological data management, and stakeholder engagement. Working closely with the CMP team, the role will involve helping to compile and organise scientific reports, contribute to the identification of pressures and threats to the ecosystem, and support the coordination of fieldwork and workshops.
Essential Criteria:

  • 5 GCSE's A*-C including Maths and English and one science subject (must be able to show evidence)
AND
  • At least 1 year continuous experience gained within the last 8 years in a paid, voluntary or academic capacity related to the conservation, assessment, or management of freshwater or terrestrial ecosystems, habitats, or species. This should include experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Understanding of Northern Ireland's environmental or wildlife legislation
  • Ecological data handling, mapping or monitoring of freshwater and/or terrestrial habitats
  • Supporting scientific fieldwork or ecological surveys
  • Contributing to the preparation of professional standard reports or evidence reviews
Desired Experience:
  • Experience supporting the development or delivery of conservation management plans, environmental policy, or ecological modelling projects.
  • Familiarity with freshwater ecosystems and their associated pressures (e.g. nutrient enrichment, invasive species, climate impacts) would be advantageous
