Job Description


We are looking for a research scientist with a real passion for tackling climate change and an interest to develop their career in environmental measurement and metrology.

The Emissions and Atmospheric Metrology group (EAM) provides science research, best practices, traceability and calibration for emission and atmospheric measurements, from the laboratory to the field. Our work underpins the metrology required for future emission monitoring projects and develops new methods for monitoring greenhouse gases and other emerging, gaseous pollutants.

EAM has a wide range of measurement services covering areas such as fugitive emissions, remote sensing, atmospheric, sensor validation, stationary source and ambient monitoring, providing these measurements to multiple industry sectors including petrochemical, agriculture, power generation, waste and landfill for a variety of pollutants.

In this role, you will:

  • Use your analytical and problem-solving skills on a variety of work including field work on industrial sites
  • Work in the field to operate sampling and test equipment to measure emission levels and atmospheric gases in accordance with prescribed procedures
  • Run experimental work in the laboratory, prepare sampling media, and repair, calibrate and maintain test equipment.
  • Interact and communicate with customer contacts, regulators, etc
  • Support the group with research projects and activities at the NPL facility
  • Write concise reports and complete data analysis with large and complex data sets
  • Maintain and ensure high safety standards in accordance with our system and customer site specific requirements
This role is based at our Teddington site and will require travel and overnight stays within the UK as well as occassionally abroad

About You

Essential:
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Maths or a related discipline.
  • You have experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Good communication and collaboration skills and can cooperate with colleagues in your team
  • You enjoy problem solving and can demonstrate critical thinking, assessing the pros and cons of your approach
  • You have evidence of writing scientific technical reports during your studies, or are willing to learn if your experience was acquired in a different setting
  • You understand the value of providing good customer service to both internal and external customers, wanting to meet and exceed customer expectations through delivering high quality work with proactive communications
  • You are committed to personal development and taking on learning opportunities to get the most from the role
Desirable:
  • Programming in Python, Labview, MATLAB or other relevant programming skills
