British Ice Skating (trading name of the National Ice Skating Association, est. 1879) is the recognised National Governing Body for ice skating in the UK, overseeing both figure skating (singles, pairs, dance, synchronised) and speed skating (long track, short track). With almost 5,000 members, 60 clubs, and over 120,000 regular skaters nationwide, the organisation supports education, development, and competitive opportunities at all levels. Job Purpose
The Scotland Development Officer will lead the delivery of British Ice Skating's grassroots strategy in Scotland, working with clubs, rinks, and partners to grow participation, strengthen pathways, and raise the profile of the sport. The role will focus on increasing membership and Learn to Skate participation, developing Scottish events, supporting schools and temporary rink engagement, and building strong relationships with rinks and communities. This post, supported by Sport Scotland, will contribute directly to British Ice Skating's strategic vision by creating inclusive opportunities, enhancing local impact, and supporting the development of ice skating across Scotland.
Key Results Areas
Participation & Pathways
Grow grassroots skating in Scotland by increasing Learn to Skate participation, creating inclusive opportunities, and supporting progression into clubs and competitions.
Club, Rink & School Engagement
Build strong relationships with ice rinks, clubs, and schools to sustain regular skating activity and expand access to the Skate UK Learn to Skate programme.
Events & Competitions
Support the delivery of Scottish events, including the Scottish Championships, and improve access for skaters at club and national levels.
Workforce Development
Provide training and resources for coaches, volunteers, and rink staff to strengthen the local workforce and support long-term sport development.
Data & Insight
Lead on participation data collection, monitoring, and analysis to support reporting and inform decision-making for British Ice Skating and SportScotland.
Collaboration & Communication
Build effective partnerships with Home Nations, coaches, officials, and other stakeholders, contributing positively to the development team and wider BIS strategy.
Job Role Statement
The Development Officer will be responsible for delivering British Ice Skating's grassroots and development objectives across Scotland, working with members, clubs, rinks, key stakeholders, and sporting partners to grow participation and opportunities. The role will also support internal BIS functions to ensure efficient services and aligned delivery. The postholder is expected to demonstrate a positive, proactive attitude in all interactions and to operate in full compliance with British Ice Skating policies, procedures, and values.
Person Specification
Essential

  • Experience in sports development or community engagement.
  • Understanding of grassroots sport and participation pathways.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with clubs, schools, rinks, and partners.
  • Experience supporting events or programmes.
  • Good organisational and project management skills.
  • Effective communicator, written and verbal.
  • Ability to collect and analyse participation data.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and in a team.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Flexible to work evenings/weekends and travel across Scotland/UK.
  • IT literate (Microsoft Office, online tools).
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining quality.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of ice skating, ice rinks, or winter sports.
  • Experience working with schools or community sport partnerships.
  • Experience developing volunteers, coaches, or workforce.
  • Experience with NGBs, Sport Scotland, or similar bodies.
  • Awareness of safeguarding in sport.
  • Experience producing resources or training materials.
  • Knowledge of digital tools/apps to support participation.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to transport.
  • Experience of using CRM/marketing systems.
