We're now looking for an experienced and motivated
Second Chef
to take a key leadership role in our kitchen team.
Role Overview
As
Second Chef
, you'll work closely with the Head Chef to lead the kitchen's daily operations, maintain high culinary standards, and ensure consistency, quality, and creativity in every dish. You'll be hands-on -- from prepping and cooking to mentoring the team and contributing to menu development.
You'll also take full charge of the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence, so this is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious chef ready to step into a senior leadership role.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and motivate the kitchen team alongside the Head Chef
Oversee daily preparation and service, ensuring consistent quality and presentation
Assist in menu planning, recipe development, and sourcing seasonal ingredients
Ensure all food is cooked and presented to the highest standard -- everything from scratch
Maintain stock levels, carry out ordering, and minimize wastage
Support with rotas, training, and staff development
Uphold all health, safety, and food hygiene standards (HACCP compliant)
Manage kitchen operations when the Head Chef is off duty
Work closely with management to maintain GP targets and food cost control
Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Sous Chef, Senior Chef de Partie, or Second Chef in a quality-driven kitchen
Passion for fresh, seasonal, made-from-scratch cooking
Strong leadership and communication skills
Excellent organizational ability and calm under pressure
Good understanding of kitchen financials (costing, GP, stock rotation)
Creative flair and enthusiasm for modern British gastropub cuisine
Food hygiene certificate (Level 2 minimum; Level 3 desirable)
