About SSGL:
Secure Solutions Group Limited (SSGL) is a
CQC-regulated independent ambulance service
based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. We provide medical transport to NHS Trusts and private sector partners across the UK, specialising in secure transport for individuals detained under the Mental Health Act.
Our team is small but close-knit, with a strong emphasis on staff welfare and well-being. We take pride in delivering compassionate, high-quality care to individuals in need during vulnerable moments. SSGL has won multiple awards, including "The Most Innovative Independent Ambulance Service - Yorkshire".
Job Role and Responsibilities:
As a Secure Ambulance Care Assistant, you will be responsible for the safe transport of service users, many of whom are detained under the Mental Health Act.
Here is how it works.
Upon successful application, we will discuss the days/hours you are available. When you get called out, you will rapidly leave your home to our base to collect an ambulance and meet with colleagues for the job. You will then make your way to the collection address, while the lead for the job goes through the risk assessment you would have been sent. Upon collection, you'll receive an additional handover from a clinician, introduce yourself to your service user, and transport them like you would your own family member to their delivery point. This could be local, but equally could be a 4-hour drive to London. From job to job you will generally take it in turns to drive and be in the back sitting with the service user, depending on who builds the best rapport with them. During the journey, like most of us would, service users typically use their devices to keep entertained and most engage in conversation. Once the service user is dropped off, we go to the next job, or back to our base and then home to be back on standby, or to rest if we've been out all day or night.
Due to the training you're provided, and the mentorship you get on the road, the vast majority of our transfers could be mistaken for a simple taxi journey. They are always compassionate and caring, calm, and panic-free.
Your duties will include:
Responding promptly to calls and arriving at the base within 10 minutes when on-call.
Driving to and from destinations across the UK in various vehicles (B-category, such as minibuses and non-emergency ambulances).
Providing emotional support and building rapport with vulnerable service users to ensure they feel safe during transport.
Conducting vehicle checks and preparing all necessary equipment at the beginning of each shift.
Assisting with the transport of mobility-impaired individuals, including the use of wheelchairs, stretchers, and manual handling equipment (training provided).
Maintaining strict confidentiality and adhering to all infection control policies.
Working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the well-being of service users and conducting dynamic risk assessments throughout transport.
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will need:
Experience
: Previous professional experience in public-facing roles (customer service, etc) or in fields such as care, healthcare, or public sector work.
Driving Licence
: Full UK manual driving licence with a minimum of 1 year's driving experience, less than 6 points, over twenty-five, and no 'DD' coded offences.
Commitment
: A willingness to commit to the role long-term (a minimum 6 months).
Flexibility
: Availability to work at any hour of the day or night during the days you are on-call.
DBS Check
: Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
Physical Fitness
: The ability to handle physical intervention techniques when required (training provided).
Maturity and Initiative
: The ability to remain calm under pressure, work independently, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
Communication Skills
: Excellent verbal communication, patient handling, and customer service skills.
Training
: Commitment to continuous training, including First Aid at Work, Basic Life Support, and mental health training.
