Security Officer

Leicester, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

De Montfort University (DMU) is an ambitious, globally-minded institution focused on delivering quality teaching and learning, giving a campus-wide, sector-leading student experience.

Faculty / Directorate

The Estates & Facilities Directorate is large and diverse, employing about 300 people, ranging from plumbers, electricians, carpenters, cleaners, porters and leisure centre assistants, to property management professionals, architects, project officers, CAD, space management, sustainability and energy and administrative personnel and of course, Security.

Role

At DMU we place service excellence at the centre of everything we do. Our Security Team delivers a welcoming, supportive presence for students, staff, visitors, and the wider community, enhancing the customer experience and helping to create a safe, inclusive, and vibrant campus.

As a Security Officer, you will provide an exceptional customer service experience, ensuring everyone who uses the campus feels supported and valued. You will help students thrive during their university journey and be confident in adapting to the more traditional security aspects of the role when required. No previous security experience is necessary: we invest in our staff and provide full training, development opportunities, and ongoing support.

You will be observant, approachable, and confident communicating with people from a wide range of backgrounds. The role requires you to work independently and as part of a team. A good level of fitness is important, as you will be patrolling campus buildings and outdoor areas on foot.

You will join a shift of Security Officers led by a Team Leader. The role operates on a 5-week rotating shift pattern providing 24-hour cover, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays. Most shifts are 8 hours, with some 12-hour shifts required. Security Officers work 37 hours per week and receive a

20% shift allowance

for evening, night, and weekend working. Flexibility is essential to support the needs of the department and the wider university.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have good observational and assessment skills, be confident in problem solving, and be comfortable making decisions in dynamic situations. You should be computer literate, familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and able to produce clear written reports using a Case Management System. While general security experience is helpful, it is not essential, full training will be provided for all key aspects of the role, and we are committed to supporting your development. A full Category B driving licence is highly desirable, though not mandatory. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

You must be able to pass an SIA course for Door Supervisor and CCTV as a condition of this role.

Open Evening Invitation

You are invited to an informal open evening from 18.30 -19.30pm and 19.30 - 20.30pm on Wednesday 14th January 2026 at De Montfort University. This will be an opportunity to hear more and meet the team you could be working with. We will be happy to answer your questions and take you on a guided tour of the campus and the Security facilities. Please call the Security Team on 0116 257 7642 to reserve a place and receive further Instructions.

Previous applicants within the last 12 months need not apply.
