We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Classroom Teacher to deliver high-quality academic instruction to young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and SEN needs. You will play a critical role in developing a safe, structured, and academically rich environment, enabling students to make sustained progress in line with their individual potential while educating 'the whole child'.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Curriculum Delivery
Deliver a structured academic curriculum with appropriate challenge, differentiation, and rigour across all subjects
Use a variety of instructional strategies and data to inform teaching practice
Plan, prepare, evaluate, and review learning programmes that enable physical, emotional, social, cultural, and moral development
Prepare pupils for formal assessments, including GCSEs, functional skills, and other accredited qualifications
Actively contribute to curriculum development within your subject or faculty area
Teach both individual pupils and small groups, adapting your approach to meet diverse needs and starting points
Learner Support & Progress
Maintain high expectations for pupil progress and behaviour
Provide targeted interventions and additional support where needed
Give clear, actionable feedback to students that supports academic growth and independence
Support pupils in developing core subject knowledge alongside broader skills such as problem-solving, literacy, and numeracy
Encourage students to reflect on their own learning and take ownership of their academic journey
Record and track data to monitor progress and inform planning
Celebrate success and progress regularly to boost self-esteem and aspiration
Professional Contribution
Work collaboratively with colleagues to support whole-school improvement
Contribute to school policies, events, and improvement plans
Take an active role in performance management and continuous professional development
Participate in staff meetings, INSET, moderation, and cross-team collaboration
Lead or contribute to the development of high-quality teaching materials and schemes of learning
Actively model professional conduct, punctuality, and preparation as a role model
Act as faculty coordinator, developing plans for subjects within your specific learning centre
Safeguarding & Pastoral Duties
Always act in accordance with the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures
Promote emotional wellbeing and help students navigate barriers to learning
Contribute to multi-agency reviews and the implementation of EHCPs
Support students with re-engagement and transition back into formal education where applicable
Help pupils manage stress or anxiety related to academic pressures through consistent and supportive routines
Work closely with the DSL and pastoral team to identify concerns and provide proactive intervention
Provide guidance and boundaries to promote resilience, independence, and emotional regulation
General Teaching Duties
Establish relationships that build confidence, trust, understanding, and mutual respect
Set reasonably challenging demands that enable pupils to develop learning abilities, self-esteem, independence, and resilience
Encourage pupils to behave in ways that will help them in the wider world
Familiarise yourself with behavioural approaches that work best for individual pupils and the school's Behaviour Management Policy
Take responsibility for break time supervision and related administrative duties
Supervise and teach pupils when colleagues are absent
Put together profiles that help other professionals understand each pupil's educational, personal, and social needs
Assessment, Recording, and Reporting
Use all available mechanisms to assess the emotional wellbeing, learning, and behaviours of pupils
Maintain detailed records of assessments and student progress
Prepare insightful and well-written reports for Statutory Annual Reviews and other meetings
Take part in arrangements for pupil presentations and supervision during exams
Resource Management
Make effective use of all available teaching resources whenever appropriate
Stay up to date with safe working practices and maintain awareness of health and safety
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Previous teaching experience
Strong subject knowledge and differentiation skills
Excellent classroom management and relational practice
Commitment to safeguarding and maintaining high expectations
Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
High level of professionalism, emotional resilience, and physical fitness for challenging situations
Willingness to undertake training courses, including out of hours when required
Desirable Requirements
Further Training/Qualification in SEND / Autism etc.
Experience with SEMH or SEND learners
Ability to lead or coordinate curriculum development
Previous experience preparing students for public exams
Experience working in specialist or alternative provision
Knowledge of EHCP processes
Experience in residential settings
