About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated
SEN / SEMH Teacher
to join our team at EdStart. The ideal candidate will have experience working with secondary-age students and a strong understanding of how to engage and support young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Special Educational Needs (SEN).
This role includes teaching
English across lower-level and GCSE classes
in the mornings, followed by PSHE, life skills, and enrichment sessions in the afternoons. Lessons are delivered in small classroom settings of
6-8 students
, allowing for highly individualised sup
Key ResponsibilitiesTeach English
Plan and deliver engaging English lessons for KS3 and KS4 students, focusing on GCSE preparation.
Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning needs within small classes of 6-8 students.
Support students in building confidence, literacy skills, and exam readiness.
Deliver PSHE, Life Skills & Enrichment (Afternoons)
Lead sessions that help students develop independence, social skills, wellbeing, and readiness for adulthood.
Plan and facilitate enrichment activities that broaden student experiences and support personal growth.
Support Students with SEN/SEMH
Provide tailored support and adjust teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of students with SEMH and SEN.
Build strong, trusting relationships that promote emotional regulation and engagement.
Apply Behaviour Management Strategies
Use proven SEMH behaviour management approaches to maintain a positive, safe, and structured learning environment.
Foster an Inclusive Learning Environment
Create a space where all students feel valued, respected, and supported in both academic and personal development.
Collaborate with Parents and Colleagues
Maintain regular communication with families, external agencies, and colleagues to support student progress and wellbeing.
Skills & Experience Required
Experience in Education:
Minimum 1 year teaching experience, ideally in a secondary or alternative provision setting.
SEMH/SEN Expertise:
Proven experience supporting students with SEMH and SEN, with an understanding of trauma-informed practice.
Behaviour Management:
Skilled in approaches that promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
Curriculum Knowledge:
Strong understanding of Entry Level and GCSE English, with the ability to adapt content to diverse learners.
Communication Skills:
Able to engage effectively with students, staff, and families.
Commitment to Inclusion:
Passionate about helping students overcome barriers and succeed, regardless of background or need.
Additional Requirements
Teaching Experience:
Minimum 1 year.
Experience with SEMH/SEN learners:
At least 1 year in a relevant setting.
Safeguarding:
Strong understanding of safeguarding procedures and commitment to child welfare.
