Job Description

The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) plays a vital role in providing personalised, 1:1 or small group support to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), under the direction and supervision of class teachers and senior staff. The LSA helps students access learning, develop communication and independence, and promotes inclusion in all aspects of school life.

Key Responsibilities:



Student Support and Inclusion:



Provide targeted 1:1 or small group support to students with a range of needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Help students engage in classroom activities, maintain focus, and follow routines, with guidance from the teacher. Support students in developing life skills, communication, and independence through structured activities and modelling. Assist with personal care, mobility, and sensory needs as required, in a respectful and dignified manner. Encourage and promote positive behaviour, using strategies and systems set by the teaching team.

Classroom and Curriculum Support:



Assist in the preparation and organisation of learning materials and activities. Adapt and reinforce learning tasks to suit individual student needs, under teacher guidance. Support the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), sensory tools, and assistive technology when required. Monitor and report student engagement, behaviour, and progress to the class teacher.

Pastoral and Wellbeing Support:



Help create a safe, caring, and inclusive environment that supports the emotional well-being and social development of students. Build positive, trusting relationships with students and act as a consistent, supportive adult. Encourage students to develop confidence, self-awareness, and positive relationships with peers.

Collaboration and Development:



Work closely with teachers, therapists, and other staff to deliver joined-up support for students. Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to discussions about student needs and support plans. Undertake ongoing training and CPD as required, especially in SEND practices and safeguarding.

Safeguarding and Compliance:



Promote and adhere to all safeguarding, health and safety, and behaviour policies of the school. Be alert to signs of concern and report appropriately in line with the school's safeguarding procedures. Support compliance with the SEND Code of Practice and other relevant legislation as required by the school.

Person Specification:Essential:



GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths. Experience supporting children or young people in an educational, care, or youth setting. A genuine interest in working with children and young people with SEND. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Patience, resilience, and the ability to build positive relationships with students. Willingness to assist with personal care and mobility needs where required. Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student welfare.

Desirable:



Level 1 or Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or willingness to work towards it). Training or experience with SEND approaches (e.g., Makaton, PECS, TEACCH, sensory integration). Experience supporting students in alternative provisions or specialist settings. Basic knowledge of EHCPs and the SEND Code of Practice.

Key Performance Indicators:



Student engagement and participation in learning activities. Positive behaviour and emotional regulation improvements in supported students. Regular feedback and contribution to team discussions and student reviews. Compliance with safeguarding, health and safety, and school support protocols.
