Purpose
Expanse Learning Wigan School is looking to appoint a qualified
English Teacher
to deliver a broad English curriculum across Key Stages 3 and 4, including Functional Skills, Entry Level, and GCSE English. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with students with SEND and a passion for inclusive, creative literacy education.
Main Responsibilities
1.
Specialist Teaching and Learning Responsibilities
Plan and deliver creative, engaging, and differentiated English lessons tailored to SEND learners.
Use assessment tools effectively (e.g., Boxall Profiles) to inform teaching and support both academic and emotional development.
Promote literacy development and a love of reading and writing through diverse, accessible teaching methods.
Create a safe, structured, and stimulating learning environment.
2.
Advocacy and Collaboration
Act as a form tutor and advocate for pupils learning, emotional, and social needs.
Contribute to a personalised curriculum that integrates communication, life skills, and emotional wellbeing.
Work collaboratively with therapists, TAs, and external specialists to support individual learning pathways.
3.
School and Professional Development
Take part in whole-school improvement and curriculum development projects.
Engage in ongoing CPD and performance development reviews.
Be open to mentoring, peer observations, and reflective practice.
4.
Behaviour Management and Student Support
Follow school-wide approaches to positive behaviour support.
Monitor and record attendance, punctuality, and behaviour data as required.
Support pupils in developing self-regulation and confidence in communication.
5.
Administrative and Pastoral Duties
Maintain a well-organised classroom and manage resources effectively.
Liaise with families and external professionals to ensure holistic support for students.
Record progress accurately and contribute to EHCP reviews and annual reports.
6.
General Responsibilities
Contribute to safeguarding, health & safety, and pastoral care procedures.
Demonstrate awareness of national SEND strategy and curriculum development.
Uphold the values and ethos of the school in all professional activities.
Your Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge
Strong knowledge of English curriculum (KS34), including Functional Skills and GCSE.
QTS or QTLS (desirable), with a PGCE or equivalent in English or a relevant field.
SEN specialist qualification (desirable).
Experience working with students with SEND/SEMH needs.
Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Understanding of trauma-informed practice and inclusive teaching strategies.
ICT literate with experience of using technology to support teaching and assessment.
Essential Requirements
Minimum GCSE grade 5 (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
Understanding of the Education Inspection Framework and its application in SEND settings.
Experience with external stakeholders (e.g., Ofsted, CAMHS, EPs, social care).
Ability to design engaging, accessible English lessons to meet a range of learner needs.
