Purpose
Expanse Learning Wigan School is looking to appoint a qualified
Humanities Teacher
to deliver an engaging and inclusive curriculum across Key Stages 3 and 4. This will include subjects such as Geography, History, and Religious Education, tailored to the needs of SEND learners. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of differentiation, inclusive pedagogy, and a commitment to developing cultural and global awareness in young people with additional needs.
Main Responsibilities
1.
Specialist Teaching and Learning Responsibilities
Plan and deliver accessible and inspiring Humanities lessons across KS3 and KS4, covering topics in Geography, History, and RE.
Design differentiated resources and schemes of work to support diverse learning profiles, including those with complex SEND.
Incorporate cross-curricular links with literacy, personal development, and SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural) learning.
Use a range of assessment tools, including Boxall Profiles, to track progress and inform planning.

Advocacy and Collaboration
Act as a form tutor, advocating for pupils academic, personal, and social needs.
Work collaboratively with therapists, learning support staff, and external agencies to provide holistic support.
Promote British Values and cultural understanding as part of a broad and balanced curriculum.
3.
School and Professional Development
Contribute to curriculum development and enrichment projects across the school.
Participate in whole-school initiatives and staff development programmes.
Engage in reflective practice, CPD, and performance development review processes.
4.
Behaviour Management and Student Support
Model and reinforce consistent, positive behaviour strategies in line with school policy.
Support pupils in developing confidence, curiosity, and resilience in their learning.
Record, monitor, and follow up on attendance and punctuality concerns.
5.
Administrative and Pastoral Duties
Maintain a stimulating, structured, and safe classroom environment.
Prepare for and contribute to student reviews, EHCP meetings, and academic reporting.
Build positive relationships with parents and carers, supporting homeschool links and family engagement.
6.
General Responsibilities
Safeguard the wellbeing of students in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Support the wider development of the school through active participation in staff meetings and initiatives.
Demonstrate a sound understanding of SEND policy and current best practices in inclusive education.
Your Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge
QTS/QTLS with a subject specialism in Humanities (e.g., Geography, History, RE).
Experience of teaching Humanities subjects within a SEND or inclusive setting.
SEN specialist qualification (desirable).
Strong knowledge of curriculum design and differentiation for a range of needs and levels.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
Familiarity with trauma-informed and therapeutic teaching approaches.
Confident in the use of ICT and e-learning platforms.
Essential Requirements
PGCE or equivalent with minimum GCSE English and Maths at grade 5 (or equivalent).
Understanding of the Education Inspection Framework and how it applies to SEND settings.
Experience working with outside agencies (e.g., CAMHS, Local Authority, social care).
A strong understanding of safeguarding and behaviour support in a SEND context.
