About the role
As an Air Vehicle Design Engineer, you will report into the Air Vehicle Design Manager and work within a multi-disciplined team. You will deliver air vehicle and associated systems engineering outputs as part of the wider team.
This will involve all aspects of design, development and test engineering associated with designing, producing, customising, documenting and supporting Callen Lenz UAV platforms. As part of the role you will interface with and support production, flight test, avionic systems and software specialists, programme management and customer representatives.
Responsibilities
Act as Project Engineer or Air Vehicle Design Lead for UAV design and modification projects, managing own output and working with other team members to ensure necessary tasks are completed in required timeframes.
Capture and derive requirements, developing solutions that meet the customer's needs.
Design and development of UAVs across a number of subsystems; aerodynamics, structure, electrical wiring, powerplant and vehicle systems.
Design for manufacture and working closely with manufacturing team to supporting company processes for both prototypes and serial production.
Technical management of suppliers to ensure delivered solutions meet requirements and timescales.
Assist programme management by acting as a technical point of contact with customers, interpreting and communicating progress throughout the system design lifecycle.
Lead and execute sub-system testing. Prepare for and support vehicle level testing.
Deploy configuration control and documentation appropriate to project needs.
Support and present at major technical reviews (PDR, CDR. TRR etc) and compliance verification activities.
Perform other related duties as required to enable co-ordination across departments (FlOps, Logistics, Security, Management) for successful project delivery

Skills
Essential
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Proficient in 3D CAD using SolidWorks or a comparable software package.
Experience applying first principles to size mechanical systems (fuel, structures, cooling etc)
Demonstrable ability of applying design for manufacture and assembly techniques for prototype and production environments.
Technical report writing and information dissemination/presentation ability.
Desirable
Systems engineering experience through the whole lifecycle in an aerospace or related environment.
Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC milling.
Experience with composite material lay-up and design for manufacture.
Experience with configuration management and document management tools and their application in an engineering context.
Experience stressing standard aerospace materials including composites.
Experience with electrical installation design including environmental considerations.
Experience designing and integrating aircraft systems including powerplants.
Experience using aerodynamic tools to evaluate properties and make appropriate design decisions.
Demonstrable problem solving ability in an engineering environment to tight timescales.
Requirements verification and validation experience in an aerospace context.
Experience interfacing with customers on a technical basis.
Hands-on experience building and/or testing of UAVs or other system
