Brief Description





Manage geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation performance and condition. Lead the monitoring and instrumentation of earthworks, drainage and other associated assets. Provide geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation engineering expertise to the key stakeholders and customers.

About the role (External)



Key Accountabilities




1. Lead the monitoring and instrumentation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical and drainage assets.


2. Undertake the review of geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation of schemes specifying necessary maintenance and renewal work.


3. Monitor trends for asset condition, failures and failure precursors and maintenance and renewal work. Confirm that geotechnical and drainage risks are mitigated, and if necessary, appropriate action is specified and undertaken and that comprehensive records are maintained.


4. Develop route specific plans monitoring and instrumentation of assets including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Manage the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of changes.


5. Support the RAM in providing the business case and sponsoring geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation of renewals and enhancement projects.


6. Act as engineering authority for technical approval and acceptance of deliverables associated with monitoring and instrumentation activities, and Designer under CDM where appropriate. Review technical development of projects, checking that the monitoring and instrumentation requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes are agreed.


7. Support investigations into significant failures that affect the safety and performance of assets. Implement actions to mitigate the risk of reoccurrence.


8. Support the RAM in providing geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation support to senior management of Operations and Customer Services and Maintenance.


9. Liaise with other members of the asset management groups or external organisations to review monitoring and instrumentation projects, and 3rd party / outside party proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system, resolve critical technical issues and understand and manage imported risks and conflicts.


10. Undertake the production of route specific asset management plans.


11. Lead the engineering input to the geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation contracts. Investigate and resolve technical and quality issues with suppliers.


Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential




o Incorporated Engineer


o Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent


o Membership of relevant professional institution


o Substantial experience of railway civil engineering, with proven abilities in geotechnical and drainage asset maintenance and renewals


o A sound knowledge of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring principles and practices.


o Solid experience with installation of monitoring instruments, data collection, and trouble shooting.


o Sound knowledge of data acquisition systems, analysis, and interpretation.


o Experience of usage of total station surveying units and various monitoring read out units (e.g. inclinometer, strain gauges, tiltmeters), in geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation.


o Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.


o An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.


o Experience in Construction Design and Management Regulations.

Desirable




o Chartered Engineer or equivalent geotechnical qualification.


o Understanding of INSAR / Satellite capabilities for monitoring.


o Experience in the use of GIS Software systems.



Salary

: 55,596 to 65,966 plus Inner London Office Location Allowance of 3,270.

This role requires working in the office 3 days per week.
