Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Automation Systems Hardware Engineer with expertise in Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
Our Systems Integration (SI) team operate across UK; therefore, the role can be based at any of the following UK offices; Aberdeen, Staines, Reading, Glasgow or Northampton on a hybrid basis.
Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.

The Role
In this role, you will be involved in designing, reviewing, and testing safety-related automation hardware for industrial processes, ensuring functional safety and regulatory compliance with both client and industry standards such as IEC standards (IEC 61508, IEC 61511).

The key objectives for this role are:
Develop hardware solutions for Safety Instrumented Systems including Fire & Gas (F&G), and Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems
Specify, design, review and test safety PLCs, logic solvers, and associated control panel hardware
Design panel layouts, cable routing, I/O wiring schemes, and power distribution with safety integrity in mind
Development and selection of wiring typical for field sensors and actuators
Ensure all designs comply with Client Standards
Ensure all designs comply with common industry standards such as IEC 61508/61511, IEE wiring regulations, and client specifications
Interpret and ensure Safety Integrity Level (SIL) requirements met throughout the safety lifecycle
Work closely with Control & Instrumentation engineers, Functional Safety specialists, and Cybersecurity teams to ensure seamless integration of safety hardware
Conduct hardware troubleshooting and validation during FAT/SAT, ensuring compliance with safety lifecycle requirements
Produce and maintain detailed documentation: GA drawings, BOMs, wiring schematics, SIL calculations, test reports, and safety validation records
Support site surveys, commissioning, and startup activities, ensuring adherence to safety standards throughout

Expected:
Proven and demonstrable experience with
Safety PLCs
(e.g., Siemens PCS7 Safety, HIMA, Triconex Yokogawa Safety manager/Yokogawa SLS etc)
Familiarity with and a good understanding of Ladder logic
Familiarity with hardwired and
relay-based logic solvers
and legacy safety systems
Knowledge of communication links and protocols (Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet) in safety-critical environments
Demonstrated understanding of IEC 61508/61511 safety lifecycle and SIL assessment
TUV certification preferred but not expected
