About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Edge Hill University's Biology Department, a dynamic and supportive team known for delivering high quality teaching and impactful research. As a Senior Biology Technician, you will play a central role in ensuring our students gain an outstanding practical experience, while also supporting cutting-edge research projects that address real-world challenges in ecology, conservation, biomedical science and beyond.


Your main duties and responsibilities will include:

Supporting Teaching and Student Learning - Preparing, setting up, and maintaining equipment and materials for practical classes and field courses, while training and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in laboratory techniques, safe practices, and correct equipment use Operating and Maintaining Specialist Scientific Equipment - Managing, operating, and maintaining highly specialised laboratory equipment, diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs where possible, and providing technical guidance to staff and students on its use. Upholding Health, Safety, and Compliance Standards - Ensuring laboratories and field activities meet the highest health and safety standards, including carrying out risk assessments, maintaining accurate records, and advising staff and students on best practice in laboratory and fieldwork settings.

You will work with state-of-the-art laboratories and specialised equipment, providing vital technical expertise and contributing directly to the success of our degree programmes and research portfolio. The role offers a varied and stimulating workload, combining laboratory preparation, student training, equipment management, and hands-on involvement in research.

About You

As Senior Biology Technician, you will have:

Technical expertise in biological laboratory techniques and specialist equipment, particularly in cell culture procedures, with experience supporting teaching and research activities Strong health and safety knowledge, including risk assessments and compliance with laboratory and fieldwork regulations Organisational and problem-solving skills to manage resources, prioritise tasks, and troubleshoot equipment or process issues Effective communication and training abilities, supporting and guiding students and colleagues clearly and confidently Flexible, collaborative, and proactive approach, with a commitment to providing an excellent student experience and working well as part of a team
