Job Overview:
The Senior Care Assistant is a crucial role within a residential care home setting, responsible for delivering high-quality care to residents, ensuring their comfort, dignity, and well-being. This role involves assisting with personal care needs, supporting daily living activities, and offering both emotional and physical support to residents. Senior Care Assistants also mentor and supervise junior staff to ensure the smooth running of the care home.
Key Responsibilities:
Personal Care:
Provide assistance with personal care, including washing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
Support residents with mobility needs, including transfers and repositioning.
Assist with feeding, ensuring proper nutrition and hydration.
Support residents with activities of daily living to maintain independence where possible.
Health and Well-being:
Monitor residents' health and report any changes or concerns to the care team.
Assist with the administration of prescribed medication, ensuring that residents receive their medication on time.
Help with the application of prescribed treatments and therapies as directed by healthcare professionals.
Monitor residents' vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse) and report abnormalities.
Emotional and Social Support:
Offer companionship and emotional support to residents, providing reassurance and comfort.
Engage residents in social and recreational activities, encouraging participation.
Support residents in maintaining relationships with family and friends.
Supervisory and Team Leadership:
Supervise and support junior care assistants, providing guidance and training as needed.
Assist with staff inductions and ensure new team members are aware of care protocols.
Ensure the team follows care plans and supports residents in accordance with their individual needs.
Lead by example in maintaining high standards of care and professionalism.
Record Keeping and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date care records, including daily logs, care plans, and incident reports.
Contribute to care plan reviews and ensure that care plans are tailored to meet individual resident needs.
Report any incidents, concerns, or accidents promptly and in accordance with company procedures.
Environment and Health & Safety:
Ensure that the care home environment is clean, safe, and conducive to the comfort and well-being of residents.
Assist with light housekeeping duties (e.g., cleaning, laundry, tidying) as required.
Ensure that all safety policies and procedures are followed, including those relating to infection control, food safety, and emergency protocols.
Family and Visitor Interaction:
Communicate with family members regarding residents' well-being and any changes in their care needs.
Foster a welcoming atmosphere for family visits and ensure that families are involved in care planning where appropriate.
Skills and Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years in a care assistant or similar role, ideally in a residential care or elderly care home environment.
Certification:
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent), Care Certificate, or a relevant qualification.
Knowledge:
Understanding of personal care, medication management, and health conditions typically associated with elderly residents.
Communication:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Empathy & Compassion:
A compassionate approach with a focus on enhancing the lives of residents.
Physical Ability:
Ability to assist with physical tasks such as lifting, moving, and transferring residents safely.
Leadership Skills:
Ability to supervise and guide junior staff, leading by example to maintain high standards of care.
Desirable Attributes:
First Aid Training:
Basic first aid or CPR training is a plus.
Experience with Dementia/Palliative Care:
Experience in supporting residents with dementia, Alzheimer's, or end-of-life care would be beneficial.
Working Hours:
Full-time
1 weekend in 4
Flexibility required depending on resident needs.
