Job Description

In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the post holder of this role to be female, as the role requires the personal care of residents who are all female.

Hours: Minimum of 22.5 hours per week (contract is for x2 days per week/ 11.25 hours per shift). Overtime is available if and when needed.

Rate of Pay: 14.37 per hour

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE SENIOR CARE ASSISTANT ROLE



The Senior Care Assistant is part of the Care Home's Senior Management team. They are required to professionally lead the care team during each shift, ensuring that a high standard of person-centred care is provided to the residents of the Care Home in accordance with their assessed needs.

They will ensure that a safe, effective and efficient care service is provided, which enhances the life of each individual.

The Senior Care Assistant will supervise and support the care team to create a warm, comfortable, friendly, homely environment for residents, and in accordance with the Care Quality Commission standards, the safeguarding policy.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



QUALIFICATIONS

NVQ2 Health & Social Care, or equivalent, with a willingness to work towards NVQ3.

CARE

1. To lead, support and supervise the Care Assistants throughout each shift to ensure that all residents' needs are met by receiving help and assistance with all aspects of daily personal care such as showering and bathing, dressing and grooming, dental hygiene, toileting and continence care, as drawn up in their care plan.

2. To encourage and support independence of each resident while maintaining residents' privacy, dignity and self-esteem, and encourage the care team to do the same.

3. To treat each resident as an individual, respecting their faith, ethnicity and background, facilitating opportunities for choice.

4. To assist each resident to maximize their potential while understanding the importance of the changing needs of a person's physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual abilities as they age.

5. To assess, set up and organize the required care, support, rehabilitation or respite care and support plan and programes for each resident liaising with the manager and ensure that each program adhered to.

6. To be alert to the changes in a resident's physical, emotional, mental and psychological health and wellbeing and ensure the required reviews are undertaken regularly to manage a residents changing condition in liaison with the medical and social care practitioners

7. To lead and monitor the resident's mealtimes, ensuring particular attention and support is given to residents with medical and dietary conditions

8. To ensure the key worker program for the residents is undertaken and monitored under the guidance of the Registered Manager.

9. To ensure residents activities, interests and hobbies are promoted, encouraged and supported and provide information as to the social needs and abilities of the residents

10. To organize and manage the residents traveling e.g. on social outings, hospital visits, appointments etc. Escort residents on such occasions when necessary.

11. To lead and manage the delivery of end of life care liaising with the medical and nursing services. Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with the Home's policies and procedures.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

1. To ensure a safe, stable, secure and healthy environment is provided for all and to report anything to the contrary to the Manager and maintenance personnel as appropriate.

2. To ensure a high level of competency and diligence with the safe administration of medication to residents in accordance with the Medication Policy and procedures, and supervise and support Care Assistants to do the same.

3. To lead with medication distribution to residents in accordance with the Medication Policies and report any errors or concerns to the Manager and support the Manager with medication audits.

4. To be responsible for the monthly ordering of medication ensuring adequate stock and stock rotation is always maintained.

5. To lead the care team in supervising and monitoring resident's safety.

6. To ensure that all fire prevention policies and procedures and security management of the home is strictly adhered to and any concerns are immediately reported.

7. To lead on the compliance of a high level of infection and prevention control and on a high level of fire safety and security to be maintained by staff throughout the home.

8. To respond quickly, calmly and effectively to emergencies, following policies and procedures and documentation accurately, supporting the care team involved.

9. To lead on ensuring residents are maximizing their mobility in accordance with manual handling procedures as required, and ensure care staff can safely undertake moving and handling.

10. Ensure the residents have the correct support equipment such as wheelchairs, aids or adaptations to maximize their safety and independence.

11. To ensure the care team use equipment safely and responsibly at all times and provide supervision and ensure training as needed.

12. To lead and manage risk assessments as directed in line with policies and procedures.

ADMINISTRATION AND COMMUNICATION

1. To provide support and assistance to the Manager and to ensure continuity of service, safety, security and support to residents and staff is maintained in accordance with established policies and procedures, in the Manager's and Deputy Manager's absence

2. To ensure that all care plans (including pre-admission assessments) are kept person-centred, current and accurate, and to ensure that agreed care plans with each resident and family/community are implemented and audited on a regular basis, using digital care planning tools. Address, along with the Deputy Care Manager or Registered Care Manager any issues of non-compliance that are identified.

3. To use and update the Person Centred Software (PCS) effectively for the management of resident's care plans; recording of activities; and medication management, in accordance with the Care Home's policies and procedures.

4. To lead on aspects of the Care Homes 'Champions' program and other care home initiatives / responsibilities as designated by the Manager.

5. To ensure good communication within the Care Home on each shift, ensuring the residents' daily care notes and daily diary are updated and correct on the digital care software and other platforms.

6. To link closely with the homes' Sister Servant and ensure good communication at all times.

7. To receive information and updates from staff on duty, and give direction and guidance as appropriate.

8. To record and maintain all digital and written records in accordance with statutory, regulatory and organisational requirements, reporting any concerns immediately to the Manager / Deputy Manager.

9. To liaise with visiting relatives, community members in line with the residents wishes.

10. To liaise with other healthcare professionals regarding residents' changing health needs and medication, and making timely and appropriate referrals to specialists. Organise the appointments and escort requirements with the manager and sister servant.

11. To practice maximum integrity in all dealings with residents' personal and financial affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with residents.

12. To answer the door and the telephone appropriately, responding accordingly and to pass on messages promptly, and ensure visitors are made welcome.

13. To partake very occasionally with on-call duties in the absence of the Manager / Deputy Manager.

14. If required, to assist with rotas to ensure that the Care Home is adequately staffed at all times.

TEAMWORK AND TRAINING

1. To organise and supervise the care and ancillary throughout each shift, working as a team member by supporting and assisting fellow colleagues, including giving guidance, training and supervision to staff during, leading by example.

2. To lead in handovers to staff at the beginning and end of each shift, aided by the digital care software.

3. To attend and participate in regular staff meetings, resident meetings, and meetings with the Manager, for reviews and updates.

4. To be actively involved in in-house training and supervision, including the induction of new care staff.

5. To participate in staff training and development programmes and attend any mandatory training programmes as required (including safeguarding; manual handling; fire and smoke safety; security; basic food hygiene and COSHH awareness) ensuring safe work practices are employed.

6. To be supported and enabled in skill development and personal development through regular supervision, training and annual appraisal in line with the Care Home's policies and procedures.

7. To maintain own competence and to remain up to date with current standards of practice through continuing professional development.

THE ENVIRONMENT

1. To lead and monitor all residents' rooms, personal clothing, equipment used (eg wheelchairs, Zimmer frames, hearing aids, spectacles) are maintained and kept to quality standards, and undertake light housekeeping duties as necessary.

2. To ensure all areas of the home are kept tidy and clutter free.

PERSONAL CONDUCT

1. To act as a positive role model by ensuring that the Charity's values are translated into practice and that all relevant legislative requirements are adhered to in order to safeguard the health, safety and wellbeing of those in our care, visitors and team members.

2. To ensure personal compliance with the Care Home's aims and objectives, policies and procedures and all statutory regulations required in registered care homes.

3. To manage professional boundaries when carrying out all duties.

4. To respect and comply with the requirements for confidentiality and Data Protection in all matters relating to the residents, staff and business of the Care Home and the Charity. Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.

5. To comply with the agreed conditions of employment; desired standards of behaviour, uniform, general appearance, personal hygiene, hours of duty, duty rotas, time keeping etc.

6. To offer a flexible approach the role of Senior Care Assistant taking into account the changing needs of residents, the service, and ongoing changes in regulatory requirements.

7. Due to the unpredictable and varied nature of life in a care home, all staff are expected to work in a flexible way when tasks not specifically in their job description have to be undertaken.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. COVID-19 considerations: Appropriate PPE to be worn by all staff and care home protocols in place.

5. The post holder must accept responsibility for ensuring that the policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety in the workplace are adhered to at all times.

6. The post holder must respect the confidentiality of data stored electronically and by other means in line with the General Data Protection Regulation of 2018.

7. To undertake any other duties, tasks or projects, as reasonably required by the Registered Care Manager, which are commensurate with the general level of this post.
