To support the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care by supervising care assistants, leading shifts, and ensuring the physical, emotional, and social needs of residents are met. The Senior Carer plays a key role in maintaining care standards, supporting compliance, and acting as a liaison between care and nursing teams.
Key Responsibilities
Care Delivery and Support
Deliver person-centred care in accordance with residents' individual care plans, ensuring dignity, choice, and independence.
Support residents with personal care, mobility, nutrition, continence, and communication.
Promptly respond to residents' changing needs and escalate concerns to the nurse or clinical lead.
Leadership and Supervision
Lead and coordinate care staff during shifts, ensuring effective deployment and teamwork.
Mentor and support care assistants, ensuring best practices are followed.
Support with onboarding and supervision of new or junior staff members.
Care Planning and Record-Keeping
Monitor and update care documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
Assist in writing and reviewing care plans, risk assessments, and daily records.
Record incidents, observations, and outcomes professionally in line with data protection standards.
Medication Support (if trained and delegated)
Administer prescribed medication in line with training, policy, and MAR guidance.
Monitor for side effects and ensure medication records are accurate and complete.
Report any medication errors or concerns immediately to the nurse-in-charge.
Communication and Collaboration
Communicate effectively with residents, families, colleagues, and visiting professionals.
Participate in staff meetings, handovers, and multidisciplinary discussions.
Promote positive relationships with residents' families and advocate for residents' wellbeing.
Quality and Compliance
Follow safeguarding, infection control, and health & safety procedures.
Support audits, spot checks, and quality assurance processes.
Adhere to the standards set by CQC and internal policies.
Person Specification
Essential:
NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care (working towards or willing to complete Level 3)
Previous experience in a care setting, preferably with older adults or in a nursing home
Strong understanding of person-centred care, confidentiality, and safeguarding
Ability to lead a team and communicate effectively
Desirable:
NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
Medication administration training and competency
Experience in shift leadership or supervision
Familiarity with electronic care planning systems
