The City of London Cemetery & Crematorium is looking for a dedicated and compassionate

Senior Cemetery Officer

to help deliver high-quality burial services for the local community. This is a vital role for someone who is experienced, organised, and able to lead by example in a sensitive and respectful environment.

About the Role



Working alongside the Landscapes Manager, you will supervise a team of Cemetery Officers, ensure burial areas are well maintained, and support all operational aspects of grave preparation and interment. This role also involves direct interaction with the public, requiring empathy, professionalism, and a calm approach under pressure. The successful candidate will be required to work a 35-hour week, Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm. Saturday working is required on a rota basis and is paid at an enhanced rate in accordance with City of London Corporation Policy.

Key Responsibilities:



Supervise, train, and support cemetery operatives in safe grave excavation and back-filling Ensure all burial areas are presented to the highest standards Prepare new and reopened graves using both manual and mechanised methods Operate and maintain excavation machinery and associated equipment Assist visitors to the cemetery and liaise with funeral directors and the public Carry out minor repair and maintenance tasks and report site damage Undertake administration using IT systems Support weekend duties as required and respond flexibly to operational needs Maintain compliance with health and safety and equality policies

What We're Looking For



We are seeking someone with strong leadership skills, relevant technical experience, and the ability to provide excellent customer care in emotionally sensitive situations.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:



Education demonstrating good levels of English and Maths Full UK manual driving licence COTS 1, 2a, and 2b accreditation (or willingness to achieve) CITB or equivalent certification to operate plant and machinery Experience working in a cemetery, construction site, or similar outdoor setting Ability to work in all weather conditions Proven experience dealing with the public in a calm, caring, and professional way Supervisory experience in a relevant environment Understanding of burial processes and health and safety practices Basic IT proficiency On occasions you will be required to excavate graves by hand, using shoring devices and moving large memorial using the bar and roller technique; therefore, a good level of fitness is also required
