This is an exceptional opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to join the Neonatal Unit at University Hospital Lewisham as a full-time Senior Clinical Fellow. This 6-month, fixed-term position, starting on September 1, 2025, is a replacement post designed for a candidate eager to enhance their skills within a dynamic Local Neonatal Unit. The successful candidate will be fully integrated into the Neonatal Intensive Care Specialist Trainee rotation, providing an ideal platform to continue meeting and advancing their training and educational objectives while fulfilling their clinical responsibilities.
The role offers a unique chance to work under the guidance of Neonatal Consultants and contribute to the teaching program for medical undergraduates, junior doctors, and nursing staff. This position is particularly well-suited for an experienced Specialist Trainee Registrar looking to strengthen their CV before applying for a National Training Number (NTN).
The primary responsibilities of this role include working within a team of resident doctors in Neonates and continuing to pursue training and educational objectives. The Senior Clinical Fellow will share the responsibility with the Specialist Trainees for the day-to-day running of the Neonatal Department. They will also be responsible for developing their skills and will report to Consultant Paediatrician Joanna Lawrence. The post holder will be expected to organize themselves, manage their time and tasks, and prioritize clinical needs. They will also need to be able to coordinate and support junior colleagues and work in multi-disciplinary teams. An interest and experience in teaching, including case presentations, is also essential.

The Neonatal Unit is a Local Neonatal Unit (LNU) with 23 cots. The unit had 456 admissions last year and provides a separate rota for consultants, registrars, and senior house officers from the General Paediatric rota. The two neonatal units at Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital form the joint LGT Neonatal Service, with a shared vision of a seamless neonatal service.
The post holder will be a Senior Clinical Fellow in Neonatal Medicine, located at University Hospital Lewisham. The role involves working with nine Specialist Trainees and six Specialist Trainee Registrars, as well as six Consultants. The duties include participating in consultant ward rounds and leading ward rounds under consultant supervision. The timetable includes daily activities such as ward rounds and handovers, as well as weekly meetings like the Neonatal meeting, Perinatal Meeting, and Paediatric/Neonatal radiology meeting. On-call arrangements conform to the guidelines outlined in the "Hours of Work of Doctors in Training". The working week is 48 hours or less, and a rota system is operated to comply with local requirements and the new contract. The annual leave entitlement is 27 or 32 days per year, and study leave is 30 days per year for approved courses.
