Senior Composite Design Engineer
.
As a
Senior Composite Design Engineer
in the
Advanced Manufacturing & Performance Technologies (AMPT) Special Projects team
you will lead the design and development of high-performance composite components, taking ownership of complex projects from concept through to production. This role demands deep technical expertise, proactive leadership, and the ability to mentor and support a high-functioning engineering team.
You will also represent AMPT externally, ensuring a high technical and professional standard is maintained with customers, partners, suppliers, and institutions.
Key Responsibilities
Leading the end-to-end design of composite components, including packaging, surfacing, tooling, and laminate specifications.
Taking ownership of large-scale design projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget control, and adherence to technical specifications.
Approving and checking work of other engineers, support team development and performance reviews.
Collaborating with structures, aerodynamics, and production teams to ensure technical excellence and integrity.
Resolving complex engineering challenges arising during design, testing, or manufacturing.
Contributing to continuous improvement, innovation, and system/process development.
Supporting recruitment, mentoring of early-career engineers, and onboarding of new team members.
Ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety requirements, while promoting best practices across the team.
Represent engineering work confidently to management and stakeholders, including directors.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Degree in Automotive, Mechanical, Motorsport Engineering or similar
Significant experience in Formula 1, top-tier motorsport, or advanced technology environments.
Expert user of CATIA V6/3DX, including surfacing and solid modelling.
Strong understanding of GD&T, lightweight structural design, composite materials, and tooling techniques.
Experience in fastener selection, load path design, and composite manufacturing methods.
Effective communicator with a leadership mindset and a collaborative approach.
Proven ability to lead by example and deliver high-quality results to deadlines.
Skilled in Microsoft Office (especially Excel, Project, Power BI).
Demonstrated leadership experience, mentoring capabilities, and ability to deliver strategic updates to senior stakeholders.
Some travel may be required to meet project and company needs. Flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence are essential.
