We require a Senior Development Engineer to apply a high level of technical and leadership skills to support the design and development of the Company\'s new product portfolio, and to apply those skills in product design changes and line extensions.

The successful candidate will initiate and lead New Product Development projects at DePuy Synthes, Blackpool within the strategic development program of the DePuy Synthes Biologics and Biomaterials franchise. Upon successful demonstration of technical and commercial feasibility, they will lead transfer to the product development phase and achieve successful delivery.

The successful candidate will need to acquire a high level of technical knowledge related to the Company\'s product range including scientific attributes, clinical applications and the competitive landscape.

They will manage internal and external NPD activities as well as coordinating other business functions\' input into successful project delivery, including managing external contacts contributing to the projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lead projects encompassing New Product Development, product design changes or other relevant design related projects.

Serve as an authority and champion in Design Control, delivering key NPD processes (eg. DHF creation, risk management, FMCA) and Quality & Compliance objectives (NC, CAPA, DHA etc.)

Acquire and possess in-depth scientific and hands-on knowledge of core business products, including orthopaedic bone cements and accessory products and future biologic/biomaterial products. Develop to the level of SME in this area. Utilise such knowledge in assessing product complaints and other vigilance issues.

Assist in and support the marketing of the Company\'s products.

Develop an in-depth understanding of orthopaedic surgery and surgical techniques relating to the company\'s products and develop to the level of SME in this area.

Represent the company and its products through internal and external meetings, presentations and publications.

Possess a personal drive to seek out industry standard process and create efficiencies at all opportunities (working practices, technical methods, procedures).

Identify appropriate team members and skills required to deliver specific project stages.

Implement and follow the Company financial and stage-gate processes for assigned projects.

Build accurate plans for assigned projects covering all phases and functions, and act as the Designated Responsible Individual for project definition, delivery and communication of achievements and lead-times at key stages.

Handle personal workload and assist the wider group in solving challenges and bottlenecks. Assist in the development of project resource requirements (people equipment, time) in line with departmental priorities and overall business framework.

Identify and onboard external suppliers and partners and develop strong commercial and technical relationships to optimise the innovation and development process.

Proactively identify innovative products, technologies, materials and methods, in line with published strategy objectives.

Generate intellectual property on current and new technologies and seek patent protection at all opportunities.

Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the competitive orthopaedic landscape and keep up to date with industry news and trends..

Represent the department and its procedures at internal and external audits, for example BSi, FDA.

Champion and promote company, HS&E and quality standards to enable the site to achieve and maintain excellent results.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor\'s degree (BSc) in Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials or related scientific field.
  • Doctorate (PhD) in Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials or related scientific field, or can demonstrate equivalence via career history.
Experience
  • Candidate should have at least 4 years of medical device product development experience
  • Essential to demonstrate scientific and technical skills to Subject Matter Expert level acquired in a relevant role
  • Essential to have experience of project management and delivery to completion within agreed timescales and budget.
  • Desirable to have knowledge of PMMA bone cements
  • Desirable to have knowledge of implantable orthopaedic devices
  • Desirable to have knowledge of Biologics and Biomaterials technology areas
  • Desirable to have knowledge of the medical device or closely related healthcare industry
  • Desirable to have experience working in a production/manufacturing environment.
