The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a
Senior Ecologist (Ornithology)
to lead and deliver ornithological elements of multidisciplinary projects. Working alongside specialists in ecology, construction, hydrology, and aquatics, you will scope, design, and manage bird surveys and contribute your knowledge to environmental assessments, mitigation strategies, and conservation planning.
This role suits someone who enjoys both fieldwork and strategy--someone who values mentoring, shaping a team, and building strong client relationships.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead and manage ornithological aspects of projects, providing technical advice to internal teams and clients
Design and lead ornithological surveys using appropriate methodologies and techniques
Produce high-quality technical reports, including:
Desk studies
Survey reports
Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)
Biodiversity chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs)
Scope and prepare proposals, quotations, and fee estimates for new opportunities
Coordinate with clients, subcontractors, and interdisciplinary project teams to ensure seamless project delivery
Support the development of internal processes and contribute to overall business efficiency
Mentor and guide junior team members, including graduates and aspiring ecologists
Adhere to relevant professional codes of conduct (e.g. CIEEM/IEMA/CIWEM/IFM)
What We're Looking For
Essential Requirements:
Degree or master's qualification in ecology, environmental science, or a related field
CIEEM membership (or working towards Chartership)
A strong background in ornithology with excellent bird ID skills
Proven experience across key survey techniques (e.g., vantage point, raptors, moorland breeding birds)
Solid understanding of scientific data collection and accurate recording practices
Advanced knowledge of the EIA process and survey methodologies
Sound understanding of conservation statuses and planning legislation relevant to UK bird species
Excellent report writing and data interpretation skills
Experience in preparing proposals and quotations
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Full UK driving licence
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
Experience with project management or time-tracking software
CSCS or EMSS Safety Passport card
LANTRA 4x4 training
Emergency Outdoor First Aid qualification
