We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Level Electrical Engineer to join our high-voltage renewables engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high quality earthing designs and electrical substation layouts. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our clients electrical networks
As part of the wider electrical design team, produce electrical layouts for substations (including AIS up to 132kV), cable route layout drawings & sections, LV layouts, switchroom and control room layouts, earthing layouts etc.
Possess an excellent working knowledge of relevant and applicable British and International Standards such as, but not limited to, BS7671, ENATS TS 12-24, ENATS 41-24, ENATS 43-8, BS EN 50341-1:2012, ENATS S40, ENATS S39, BS EN 61936-1, NGTS 2.01 and BS7354.
Identify and ensure design compliance with all relevant standards, legislation, Customer requirements, DNO standards and contract specifications throughout the project lifecycle.
Review tender or contract documentation and establish the primary electrical scope of works and prepare design deliverables.
Personal Skills & Qualities
A Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Electrical preferred).
Previous experience with consultancy, contractor or utility in the Power industry.
Previous experience of technical management of a specialist design team
Experience in the field of primary electrical design of HV / EHV AC substations and BoP projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV.
Understanding of industry HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications.
Ability to take the initiative, demonstrate a pro-active approach to activities, problems and oneself.
Understanding of power cable installation, their requirements and installation parameters i.e. flexible or rigid arrangements, minimum bending radii etc.
Ability to manage the various inter-departmental design interfaces (i.e. structural design, planning, electrical design, CAD technicians) efficiently and effectively to deliver complex designs solutions.
Ability to both write and understand technical documents relating to all aspects of substation electrical plant & equipment.
Have an excellent understanding of risks associated with cabling works. Have working knowledge of the role of the designer under the CDM Regulations 2015.
Ability to complete a designers risk assessment for designs being developed and produced.
Ability to prioritise workloads in a proactive and organised fashion (using software tools as necessary) to ensure key deadlines are met and reliant parties are kept informed.
The ability to use a proprietary 3D CAD package such as Revit would be desirable.
Detailed Role Requirements
Be proficient in producing substation electrical layout drawings for
11kV distribution networks
22kV distribution networks
33kV switchrooms and control rooms
66kV AIS substations
132kV AIS substations
132kV GIS substations
BoP/EPC site layouts for battery and other renewable projects
Produce plan and elevation drawings through HV / EHV AIS compounds
Produce bus bar calculations to determine the most appropriate busbar size and support requirements.
Produce busbar bar and clamp schedules, specifying the correct fixed and sliding clamps for the installation situation.
Produce initial outline support structure designs and schedules, allowing a specialist steel fabrication provider to detail up.
Design and analysis of earthing systems for substations, power plants, renewable energy sites (e.g., solar, wind, battery), and grid connections.
Act as the named earthing design engineer for a particular project. This typically involves producing a suite of earthing design drawings and documents.
Modelling of earthing systems within CDEGS (typically we would expect our primary electrical designers to provide a base earthing layout)
Perform soil resistivity testing, earth potential rise (EPR) studies, and touch/step voltage assessments.
Familiarity with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and lightning protection.
Undertaking fall of potential testing where necessary
Production of a final earthing fall of potential test report
Undertaking impressed voltage studies and producing associated technical reports
Undertaking lightning risk assessments and lightning studies (if the risk assessment process determines a requirement)
Specification of earthing materials for above and below ground earthing and lightning protection systems
Where necessary, manage external design suppliers who may be undertaking earthing design or similar activities.
Undertake lightning risk assessments to the requirements of BS 62305-2.
Produce above ground earthing layouts to communicate to site installation teams how to connect structures, plant and equipment to the main earthing system in accordance with the relevant standards.
Produce accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations
Produce specifications for major items of plant such as disconnectors and contribute to the production of specifications for more complex items such as circuit breakers.
Produce switchroom and control room earthing layout drawings and wall elevations
Produce switchroom and control room heating, lighting & ventilation layout drawings & elevations including block diagrams to convey LV AC details.
Produce switchroom and control room cable management drawings and elevations.
Produce site wide ducting / cabling layout drawings
Possess a working understanding of G81 standards and DNO's approved equipment registers.
Produce earthing materials schedules to convey requirements to site installation teams.
Interface with the procurement team to provide suitable specifications where necessary and approve the cable data sheets prior to purchase ensuring they meet the project requirements, employers requirements and appropriate British and European standards.
Ensure all required designs, models and drawings have an adequate level of review, checking and approval, including suppliers and subcontractors, according to Quality Assurance processes and in line with a 'right first time' philosophy.
Collaborate with designers from other disciplines under coordination of each projects
Embed safety and sustainability by design on all projects, ensuring compliance with the latest CDM Regulations.
Analyse and lead the resolution of design challenges.
Ensure scope of works is delivered to programme, budget and quality.
Interface with other stakeholders as required for project delivery.
Ensure document management procedures are always followed. This will include document numbering, naming and revision control.
Undertake training and mentoring to junior engineers and supervise their work.
Contribute to identifying training needs for the team.
