Carbometrics is a specialist chemistry company based in Bristol, UK. Our core competency is the design, synthesis, and derivatisation of highly selective and robust carbohydrate-binding molecules. Our mission is to help people with diabetes to live more normal and longer lives. We are using our proprietary Biomimetic Glucose Binding Molecules (GBM) to develop a new glucose sensor chemistry that will enable market-leading Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM).
About the role
The successful candidate will work as part of a small engineering team supporting the research and development of Carbometrics technology. We are looking for someone to lead the electronics and firmware development of prototype Wearable Devices that demonstrate the company's core technology.
The candidate should be hands-on and able to work independently, adaptable to ideas and change, resourceful and self-motivated.
The role is based within our highly innovative team in Bristol's only dedicated scientific incubator: Science Creates (St Phillips Incubator) (see Science Creates - A Home for Deep Tech in Bristol for more details). Roles and Responsibilities
Core:
Develop prototype wearable devices for clinical trials with an eye on transferring to volume manufacturing
Effectively communicate progress and blockers to the company without getting bogged down in technobabble
Collaborate with cross-functional teams
Maintain clear and thorough documentation across development and throughout testing processes
Additional:
Maintain an excellent safety culture by timely reporting of all safety incidents and learning events
Assist the team to ensure procedures are developed and kept up to date
Build strong, positive working relationships with team members

Essential Skills:
Knowledge of bare metal microcontroller and embedded C development
Excellent numeracy, literacy, and computer skills.
Proficiency in key MS Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
Ability to work independently with good time management.
Experience
Essential:
Knowledge of common Embedded interfaces such as DMA, SPI, I2C
Experience with commonly available low-power BLE SOC microcontrollers e.g. Nordic, TI, Dialog
Experience in Designing Analog Front Ends and PCB layouts for low noise
Experience with BLE GATT profiles
Experience in reading datasheets and implementing drivers
Experience with Schematic Design and PCB layout in CAD, preferably KiCAD
Experience bringing up, debugging and testing Dev boards and prototype devices
Experience working with Mobile App developers
Desirable
Experience designing flexi-PCBs
Experience developing test rigs using Rapid development techniques e.g Python, Arduino, Raspberry Pi
Experience in optical sensing technology implementation e.g. Photodiodes, Delta Sigma conversion, Integrating ADC, Quadrature demodulation
Experience with Optical Bench testing and equipment e.g. Spectrometer, power meters
Experience developing lightweight Android Mobile App test programs
Experience with High volume Contract Manufacturers and ATE requirements
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
Experience in embedded cybersecurity
Experience working under a Quality Management System e.g. ISO9001, ISO13485
Education and Qualification
Relevant Degree in Software or Electrical Engineering preferred
Interested Candidates without a formal Degree but significant relevant experience should still apply.
5+ years in Embedded Hardware Design and Firmware Programming required
