About the role
Xirgo Technologies is recruiting a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join us in supporting existing products and creating the next generation of Vehicle telematics products and solutions.

In this role, you will support development of embedded software for Vehicle telematics devices, including plug and play trackers for passenger, light, and heavy-duty vehicles. You will be involved not only in supporting our existing codebases, but also full lifecycle development of our next gen IoT based product, including integration of new MCU, BLE, GPS and Cell modules, allowing support of automotive protocols (e.g., CAN, OBD-II)
You will be part of a dynamic Agile-Scrum team engaged in full lifecycle development, including New Product Introduction (NPI) and Proof-of-Concept (PoC) validation.

This role requires the successful candidate to be based within a reasonable commuting distance of our Belfast office. Remote or fully remote arrangements are not available for this position.

What you'll do
Architect and develop embedded firmware for vehicle telematics solutions in C
Design and implement analogue and digital hardware and software interaction
Collaborate with hardware, QA, and mobile/backend teams to deliver reliable, production-grade software
Design / Implement FW updates on existing legacy codebase, bug fix, test and documentation.
Support testing, validation, and continuous integration aligned with Agile practices
Act as a technical expert in customer discussions, PoCs, and solution design workshops
Experience / Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development in C or C++ to MISRA or similar standard with strong debugging and optimization skills
Experienced in full stack device developments, driver level, middleware, application layers, memory management, and optimization techniques etc.
Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, ThreadX, or similar
Strong understanding of wireless communications (e.g., LTE, BLE, Wi-Fi) and IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP)
Experience of microcontroller families and architectures
Experience with peripheral interfaces: UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, ADC, PWM
Hardware debugging and troubleshooting skills
Holds self-accountable to achieving goals and standards
Excellent communication skills; oral, written and presentation
Strong organization, planning and time management skills to achieve results
Personal and professional ethical values and integrity
Interpersonal & collaboration skills to work effectively with all levels of the organization including senior management, suppliers and/or external customers
Occasional travel may be required for customer support or field testing
Desirable
Experience in development of embedded software for battery-powered devices
Hands-on experience with CAN, CAN-FD, OBD-II, UDS, or similar automotive protocols
Experience with scripting (Python, Bash) and test automation
Experience developing products/systems compliant to industry standard SW quality standards
Schematic reading and basic hardware design understanding
