The Streetscene Service, within the Climate Homes Economy Directorate, is dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and accessible environment for the residents, businesses, and visitors of Hackney. By contributing to the well-being of our community and fostering a sustainable public realm, we aim to create a thriving and inclusive urban landscape.
The Highways Team, a part of the Streetscene Service, is responsible for the design and maintenance of the entire highway network, including footways, carriageways, structures and bridges, drainage systems (including sustainable urban drainage systems - SuDS), street lighting, and arboriculture.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Engineer (Bridges) specialising in Major Projects to join our Highways team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in the development and management of major capital investment programs within a complex urban environment. Your primary responsibility will be overseeing and delivering both major and minor bridge maintenance projects across the borough, spanning from Shoreditch to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and surrounding neighbourhoods. It will be essential to ensure that all projects are executed to a high standard and aligned with our vision for the area.
To succeed in this position, you will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of highways construction, structures, project management, and general highway maintenance. Additionally, you must possess extensive experience in bridge engineering and construction, including managing and supervising a team of engineers to successfully deliver a wide range of schemes on the public highway. Your experience should extend to working with external contractors and within a local authority context.
Candidates for this role should exhibit exceptional development management skills, familiarity with planning policies and processes, and possess excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English. The ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and provide oversight to a team is crucial. While not mandatory, possession of a relevant professional qualification and membership or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body is desirable.
As a Council, our most outstanding asset is our staff, who are highly dedicated to serving our residents and committed to our goals as an organisation.
