Principal Engineer. Management Team, The Director(s)

The successful candidate will desirably have a minimum of three years' experience in managing the design process of construction projects and the ability to ensure adherence to construction specifications and standards. An outstanding Senior Engineer will be someone whose expertise can be shared with the team and is methodical in their approach from conceptual through to detailed design.
The successful candidate will also be expected to work with limited supervision, preparing technical design information (including 3D models) and written inputs to technical reports to deliver engineering solutions for a range of projects. The work will cover sections of infrastructure, earthworks, remediation, surface drainage, SUDS and sewerage. These services will be provided for our client's residential, commercial, employment, retail, industrial and distribution schemes. The work will be across all project phases including pre-planning and feasibility, through to construction and demolition.
The Senior Engineer will work closely with colleagues to support activities that offer the best service to the client. Through your interactions, you'll be able to gather useful intelligence on client needs and work with the team to deliver innovative solutions. Typically the technical aspects of projects become the responsibility of the Senior Engineers, whilst managing a team of Project engineers, Graduates and Technicians in delivering the technical output to Project Managers for presenting to the client.
As Senior Engineer you'll utilise your strong communication and engagement skills to achieve client, people and business outcomes, working with your team and peers that are based in different locations across the UK. Your appetite to learn new skills whilst honing and improving existing skills is essential.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Take ownership of technical challenges, develop a strategy and implement the solution through engagement and Liaising with Clients, regulators/other project stakeholders and other in-house skill groups;
Lead people on projects to deliver positive outcomes for clients
Guide and mentor Technicians, Graduates and Project Engineers
Produce design deliverables (assumption notes, technical specifications and calculation notes, etc)
Perform analysis tasks as necessary
Oversight, verification and leadership for the preparation of Calculations, CDM activities, Basis of Design, Material Specifications, Scopes of Work, Technical Reports, Inter-discipline design coordination and supervision
Technical verifications of civil engineering documents
Prepare an outline brief, visit site, review information including planning history and services
Prepare technical details for Architectural design and prepare technical specifications
Liaise and attend meetings with Architects, clients, subcontractors and other professionals
Represent the business, in a professional and courteous way
Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of projects
Making sure the project complies with statutory requirements
Complying to Health and Safety and CDM regs.
Performing due diligence on the impact and feasibility of new construction sites.
Overseeing all project stages from preliminary layouts to final engineering designs.
Surveying new construction sites and assessing existing structures for upgrades.
Designing and recommending improvements to computer-aided design (CAD) software drawings and schematics.
Preparing work schedules and allocating resources, as well as supervising junior engineers, construction managers, workers, technicians, and contractors.
Inspecting completed projects for compliance with industry codes, specifications, and safety standards.
Documenting processes and presenting project progress updates to senior managers and clients.
Preparation of engineering models including cut and fill appraisals, Retaining Wall design, Highway Structure assessment, infrastructure design, drainage design including SUDS and ground modelling to set site levels;
Understanding the relationship between and working with other project disciplines.
Experience
A minimum of 6+ years' experience in a technical engineering position
Significant Experience in delivery of design packages through all phases of their lifecycle
Experience of supervising managing staff/agency resources
Essential Criteria:
Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
Chartered or working towards chartership with relevant institution (e.g., ICE or IStructE)
Minimum of 6 years'+ experience in Civil / Structural design
Ability to work within, and where required, lead a design team, and also able to collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams
Knowledge and previous experience in the design and/or construction of civil engineering solutions using Eurocodes
Capability to prepare structural designs in all conventional materials
Experience in refurbishment projects
Experience identifying potential problems and solutions and providing advice to clients on design options
Talent to prepare schematic Civil / Structural designs based on basic architectural layouts
Good understanding of design procedures, change control, checking and review.
Experience in the production of infrastructure design packages & drawings.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings and sketches
Reinforced concrete and steel design experience
Experience using finite element modelling software and associated post processing software, with experience in validation and verification of modelling tools and their outputs
Understanding of the use of design tools within a BIM environment
High standard of written Welsh and English, highly proficient with the use of Microsoft Office suite including, Excel and Word.
Knowledge of surface, and foul water design and/or construction.
Knowledge of Sewers for adoption and Design Manual for Roads and Bridges
Competent in 3D design and modelling
Highly competent using Causeway Flow, Civils3D, AutoCAD, Civils 3D, and/or Autodesk ICM
Knowledge of Water Authority approval processes (i.e. S104, S106)
Awareness of National Planning Policy and design requirements relating to flood risk management
Able to manage workloads effectively and efficiently to meet deadlines
Knowledge of the Highways Act and expe4rience of the various technical documents of the DMRB including CS450.
Competent in relationship building (i.e. with external bodies and authorities)
Able to work to your own initiative, independently, and within a team
Methodical, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
