Within A&M, a specialist team was established in EMEA to provide Quantum, Delay and Technical expert witness and advisory services to the Construction industry. The
Construction Disputes
team supports clients within the construction industry and work with law firms to provide expert advisory and/or witness support in construction claims and dispute matters.
Our team of experts have proven track records and highly respected in their fields. Our experts have testified across the globe on many of the largest quantum, delay, engineering and commercial damages matters.
The Role and Responsibilities
As part of our continuous growth plan, we aim to expand and strengthen the existing Technical Expert Services team across the EMEA. We are seeking to recruit a Forensic Civil/Structural Engineer within our London team. You will work as part of the construction dispute team working on heavy civil engineering projects requiring forensic analysis of various structures including concrete structures (ranging from a concrete hard standing to a RCC dam) and steel structures (ranging from a steel truss to a cabled bridge). The challenge is to assess the current condition of the structure, diagnose the status of the design and construction in relation to code compliance and good industry practice, identify any deficiencies and effectively communicate them with nontechnical audience, and potentially propose practical remedial measures to remedy the observed defects with minimum disruption to the operation of assets.
This is a technically demanding role, and we are seeking candidates with a strong interest in forensic engineering. The ideal candidate will have considerable ability in the detailed structural analysis and investigation of structures, and the ability to bring considerable creativity to resolving structural problems and deficiencies. The work requires a detailed understanding of structural principles and detailing in concrete and steel structures with a focus on heavy civil engineering. As part of the role, you will:
Work independently and as part of a team.
Undertake forensic assessment in the field of civil and structural engineering to identify root cause(s) of civil and structural engineering issues and any associated damages.
Produce and review calculations, models, reports, and presentations to an excellent standard, on time.
Undertake independent research of technical publications and literature in support of assessment into code verification and assisting potential remedial solutions
Present your work to your senior colleagues (usually the named expert witness), assist them in producing their expert reports, and review their works for quality assurance.
Required Skills and Experience
We are looking for a candidate with:
A Master's degree MEng / MSc in civil or structural engineering.
A Chartered Member of the ICE or IStructE with the Engineering Council UK or equivalent body.
Ability to forensically review civil and structural engineering issues
Extensive experience as a consulting engineer in design and construction of heavy civil engineering projects
Extensive infrastructure design experience, particularly in reinforced concrete design, structural steelwork design and marine structural design
Experience as a lead structural engineer on medium to large projects
Extensive knowledge of British and European codes of practice
Strong analytical and structural site inspection skills
Experience using common analysis software (including or similar to STAAD, SAP2000, TEDDS, ETABS and SAFE) and willing to quickly learn to use new analysis packages as required, including fully non-linear analysis packages.
Ability to communicate complex technical matters in plain English (written and verbal)
In addition, the following are highly desirable:
Forensic analysis experience to assist legal proceedings
Expert witness work as an assistant expert
A construction law degree
