Our mission
Develop a decarbonised shipping industry, with human safety and sustainability at its core. To accelerate the safe, sustainable, and human-centric transition of the maritime industry, by building coalitions that deliver programmes of research, insights, and policy to unlock shipping's decarbonisation and accelerate zero emissions fuel adoption.
What we're looking for
We are looking for an experienced Human Factors Specialist with a background in safety critical systems and infrastructure (marine, aviation), together with a good understanding of engineering, operational impacts and safety processes.
5 years of experience as a min - ideally within operational environments .
What we offer you
The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose with a mission to engineer a safer and sustainable world.
The role will be within the LR Decarbonisation Hub, which has a mandate to support its external stakeholders from a technical perspective - but it also has a strong commitment to its own personnel and their professional development. If required, suitable training will be provided both in-house and via external sources.
The role
Key responsibilities:
The role encompasses a Human Factors contribution for both operational and design attributes. This is linked to the development of new vessel systems and layout in association with technology coupled to new green fuel adoptions.
Human Factors Integration - Lead the development of policies, procedures, and risk assessments related to Human Factors in high-hazard activities, including Safety Critical Task Analysis and Design impacts.
A need for strong experience in dealing with Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Human performance issues, especially within a design perspective.
Training & Competency Awareness - Developing competencies and training frameworks to support and influence training/ competency programmes for seafarers operating across a new technology value chain.
Review investigations of incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences from a lesson learnt perspective and how these can be employed to future proof future vessel designs.
Collaboration - Build relationships with Stakeholders (Research bodies, Ship designers, owners, and operators) and Regulators.
Risk Management - Working closely with internal/ external risk teams, Integrate Human Factors risk management into overall operational, health, safety, and environmental protection strategies.
Knowledge/ Experience of safety processes, including HAZ ID's, HAZOPs relating to risk reduction strategies and processes.
Desirable experience within high hazard industries, "Maritime", "Process" or "System" Safety, and environmental protection regulations.
Development of Human Reliability Analysis and its implementation into QRA's - including knowledge of HEART, THERP etc.
Understanding operator tasks to influence design, identifying issues with design and system processes, leading to making changes to improve safe operability.
Analysing and assessing workload and situation awareness to optimise operator performance and safety through design - e.g. alarm management, onboard safe havens etc.
Through Stakeholder collaborations, plan and conduct user trials to assess developing designs and influence the optimisation of user interaction.
Developing and analysing Human Computer Interaction (HCI), especially those linked to Human Autonomous Teaming (HAT) - aim to provide guidance, recommendations and where applicable, mitigations.
Assessing HMI within new designs and/or modified vessels with a view to provide industry Human Factor guidance, input to recommendations and mitigations, including creating new design philosophies.
