The Finance Division is at the heart of the University's operations, managing resources and mitigating financial risk to enable world-class teaching and research. Within this division, the Insurance Section plays a critical role in protecting the University's tangible and non-tangible assets and reputation through expert risk management and innovative insurance solutions.

The Role

As Senior Insurance and Mutual Advisor, you'll join a small, expert team where your decisions matter. You'll be challenged by complex insurance arrangements, negotiate claims, and provide strategic advice across a diverse academic and operational landscape. What makes this role unique? You'll help drive the development of Cambridge Mutual Limited, an innovative in-house risk transfer solution, giving you exposure to governance, board-level reporting, and financial planning.

Your Skills

What We're Looking For


You're a clear communicator, capable of building trust and influencing outcomes at all levels, from departmental staff to board members. Have insurance expertise: strong knowledge of insurance terminology, policy interpretation, and risk management practices, including compliance with the Insurance Act 2015. Team Collaboration: Enjoys working as part of a close-knit specialist team while building strong relationships across the wider University. Negotiation & Communication: Ability to negotiate confidently with insurers, brokers, and loss adjusters, and explain complex insurance concepts clearly to non-specialists. Analytical & Organisational Skills: Skilled in analysing data, managing budgets, and prioritising a diverse workload with accuracy and attention to detail. Technical Competence: Comfortable with electronic record-keeping, financial reporting, and using tools like Excel, Word, and Outlook as well as SharePoint. Professionalism & Discretion: Proven ability to handle confidential information and manage sensitive queries with tact and integrity. Qualifications: GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C or above) and ideally a Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate (or willingness to work towards it).

Location

The University is supportive of hybrid working, where some work is undertaken on University premises and some in a remote working environment. The aim of our approach is to enable as many staff as possible to work in a hybrid way if they wish and where their role allows. This arrangement is subject to change and will not form a part of the contractual terms of the role.
