About the role:

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Manager Indirect Tax to join our team in Basildon. This pivotal role will report directly to the Vice President, Global Business Services and will lead the global VAT function, overseeing international VAT compliance, strategy, and advisory, while managing a department of four.

Main responsibilities & duties:

Overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of international VAT compliance
Managing and overseeing the UK and overseas VAT strategy and compliance
Providing recommendations and delivering on process and systems improvements
Managing the Indirect Tax SAP S4/Hana configuration
Ensuring adequate controls and procedures in line with HMRC SAO requirements
Ensuring VAT legislative changes and standards are closely reviewed and adopted globally as appropriate
Leading and providing strategic input into global indirect tax audits and enquiries
Advising the business on all indirect tax matters including complex technical issues and matters arising from new business developments i.e. new territories, customs/supply chain, Brexit and ad-hoc VAT matters
Acting as lead contact in respect of third-party advisors/tax authorities in respect of UK/international VAT matters
Business partnering with various senior stakeholders and raising awareness of VAT issues within the business
Acting as point of contact for VAT questions, issues and projects
Leading on VAT integration for new overseas subsidiaries and VAT reporting in overseas jurisdictions
Managing four team members who are responsible for the submission of day-to-day indirect UK and overseas tax compliance
Managing the relationship with indirect tax advisors internationally
Managing schedule of VAT touchpoints in each jurisdiction and monitoring the impact of any changes
Ongoing review of overseas VAT/GST/Sales taxes incurred where there are no VAT registrations and managing reclaims/strategic registrations
Reviewing and maximising use of special customs procedures to minimise customs duty liabilities and to efficiently manage cash flow
Acting as an escalation contact for the management of day-to-day relationships with tax authorities in relation to indirect tax matters
Assessing indirect tax impacts of business activities within other departments and managing their compliance with indirect tax legislation
Providing ad-hoc indirect tax advice to colleagues in the business where required
Conducting comprehensive indirect tax due diligence for M&A transactions, ensuring full tax compliance and risk mitigation
Analysing and assessing transfer tax implications, including VAT, stamp duty, and other transactional taxes, to provide strategic advice in cross-border and domestic deals
Evaluating permanent establishment risks, reviewing the tax implications for international entities and recommending structures to minimise exposure and potential liabilities
Performing detailed assessments of indirect tax positions and exposures during pre-acquisition phases, collaborating closely with legal and finance teams
About you:

Candidates with strong experience of VAT/indirect tax across multiple jurisdictions and a deep understanding of UK VAT legislation, should have the skills and experience required for the role. We are also looking for:
Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) or CTA with a strong indirect tax background
Strong experience in VAT/indirect tax, ideally including in-house experience in a regulated or multinational environment
Experience in pharmaceutical or life sciences sectors is desirable but not essential
Strong understanding of UK VAT legislation, with exposure to EU VAT, customs, or global indirect tax a plus
Proficient in Excel and ERP systems, preferably SAP S4/Hana
Analytical mindset, excellent communication skills, and commercial awareness
Comfortable working cross-functionally and managing multiple stakeholders
