The Role
As a Senior Marine Engineering Consultant, you'll play a key role in delivering complex engineering solutions across surface ship and submarine programmes. Working closely with the Head of Solutions Engineering, you'll help shape and grow our maritime consultancy offering, ensuring technical excellence and strong client relationships within a dynamic defence environment.
You'll apply your expertise in marine power, propulsion and auxiliary systems to influence system design, assurance and acceptance for major UK defence assets. The role combines technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and systems thinking to deliver integrated solutions in a highly regulated, mission-critical domain.
Your responsibilities will include:
Drive marine engineering and systems engineering best practice across projects on client programmes
Successfully delivering critical design review, assurance and acceptance project milestones and supporting technical artefacts
Technical management and leadership of engineering teams as well as technical sub-contract management of key suppliers
Develop procurement specifications for complex systems and marine engineering equipment and solutions, support technical evaluation of tenders and onboarding of suppliers
Develop and manage system requirements, including CONOPS and CONUSE assessments, ensuring alignment with naval standards and MOD regulations
Identify and mitigate technical risks while exploiting opportunities for innovation in marine systems design
Collaborate with OEMs, MOD stakeholders and integrated project teams to ensure seamless delivery
Prepare and present technical reports, design documentation, and client-facing presentations
Support growth initiatives by identifying opportunities in defence and adjacent markets
Collaborating across wider Whitetree teams, service lines and client projects to enhance Whitetree capabilities and improve skills utilisation
In your first 3-6 months, success might look like:
Building strong working relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues.
Producing high-quality technical documentation and project deliverables.
Supporting business growth by spotting new opportunities or contributing to bid or proposal activity.
Skills & experience required
Experience in concept design and options analysis in support of early platform systems requirements definition, budgeting and design to support MOD initial outline business cases.
Background in marine engineering for naval ships and/or submarines, including design, integration, and support.
Strong understanding of naval platform systems design, integration, and performance modelling.
Familiar with MOD standards, Def-Stan requirements, and classification society rules for naval vessels.
Experience developing user requirements, CONOPS, CONUSE assessment, their requirements definition and acceptance.
Experience of working collaboratively as part of an integrated systems engineering and project team(s).
Experience applying the V-Cycle process to complex maritime systems.
Skilled in requirements development, decomposition, and V&V for marine systems.
Ability to interpret and utilise naval architecture principles and marine system interfaces.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
A degree in Engineering or a related field (or equivalent) would be beneficial.
Experience in Naval Shipbuilding or Support and through MOD capital procurement programmes or collaborative Defence frameworks is desirable.
Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration with IMarEST or IMechE is desirable.
Knowledge of submarine-specific engineering challenges (e.g., pressure hull integrity, stealth systems) would be beneficial.
Ideally located within a commutable distance to Bristol.
Current right to live and work in the UK.
Current SC clearance or willing and eligible to undergo a Security Clearance check.
Willingness and ability to work from home and travel for client engagements, including overnight stays away from home around the UK when required.
