Company Description
-De Beers has a dynamic portfolio of internal innovation initiatives spanning new business model,
product, service and process innovations that aim to optimise the performance of the current profitable
core business and simultaneously build new business. Our competitive environment demands that we
operate differently, and in an integrated and connected manner, to enable faster transition of these
innovation initiatives through to impact by utilizing new processes, products/services and business
models.
Our integrated innovation function - De Beers Group Technology - has two broad deliverables:
The identification, research, venturing, and deployment of new processes, connected technology products and services and new business models to unlock maximum value from innovation for De Beers
Build on existing foundations to commercialise technologies to 3rd parties - growing profitable new revenue streams
These deliverables provide an emphasis on integration and delivery of connected technologies to
optimise the existing core business whilst advancing our continued exploration of new business models
that unlock maximum value for the De Beers Group, while also establishing and pursuing a pathway to
profitable growth and additive revenue streams.
-The purpose of this role is to be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of
whole machine or instrument design, including mechanical systems, and sub-systems, from concept to
production.
Key Responsibilities:
Concept generation of machines and mechanical systems - use relevant tools and techniques for generating and communicating concepts of proposed mechanical solutions to team members and stakeholders
Detailed design generation of machines and mechanical systems - be deeply involved in the detailed design of machines and mechanical systems by using relevant tools and techniques for generating and communicating mechanical solutions to team members and stakeholders.
Machine and mechanical system verification - make judgements on suitable material selection, components and methods of construction. Identify weak points in designs, predict failure modes and provide solutions. Undertake design for assembly, manufacturing and serviceability reviews and make design changes where necessary
Create technical specifications of end-products - produce appropriate technical specifications based upon required criteria of a product or system (i.e. mechanical, process, environmental, financial, safety). Specify suitable components and systems (procured or manufactured) as required
Generate CAD models of designs, along with associated part and assembly, drawings, and assembly instructions - use 3D CAD package (such as Creo) to model parts and assemblies of mechanical systems, displaying good-practice modelling principles
Use relevant prototyping, manufacturing methodologies, and material selection to test, build, and validate designs - build and test designs, using relevant prototyping/manufacturing techniques to validate applicability. Create and lead experiments, and where required, provide recommendations and solutions for the end-product backed-up with documented test results
Adhere to relevant safety and environmental standards along with legislation related to the design of machinery - develop products that satisfy internal company standards and meet required safety and environmental standards. Be conversant with local, national and EC legislation related to the design of machines and their use.
Ensure work is documented to a high-standard - document designs, experiments, user manuals, safety documentation, to a high-standard for various stakeholders (management, team members, end users, etc)
Identify, communicate and mitigate areas of risk from a mechanical standpoint - highlight development risks that have impact to technical, financial, and schedule deliveries and develop mitigation solutions
Support Post Development Engineering activities - undertake engineering updates and enhancements via engineering change notice to current products that have been released for production
Support and mentor junior engineers - support the technical development of junior engineers through coaching and mentoring
Promote and assist with the development of standards - support the development of internal standards and ways of working
Act as technical project lead - technically lead projects where required and provide project management
Line management - line-management duties may be a part of this role as required
