The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, analysis, and integration of complex mechanical systems within Kraken's Services portfolio. This includes Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) products, remotely operated towed vehicles (SeaKite and Katfish), launch and recovery systems, and other marine survey technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead mechanical design and draughting of components and systems using SolidWorks 3D CAD, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and project requirements.
Develop and maintain engineering documentation including 3D models, drawings, test plans, manuals, and training materials.
Manage product data and documentation using Product Data Management software ensuring accurate version control and revision history.
Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation studies to optimise designs for safety, performance, and manufacturability (including stress, vibration, and thermal analysis).
Develop and execute test procedures to verify compliance and validate performance, functionality, and reliability.
Participate in all design life cycle phases including concept, preliminary design, detailed design, and testing.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across Systems, Electrical, Operations, Production, and Project Management to ensure integration and quality.
Support suppliers, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with Kraken and industry standards.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in mechanical design and production processes.
Provide on-site and field support to clients, including occasional travel and hands-on testing or assembly work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline; postgraduate qualification desirable.
4+ years of experience in mechanical design and engineering, ideally within marine, offshore, or subsea environments.
Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD and mechanical simulation tools.
Knowledge of engineering review processes, design standards, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical reporting skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities for effective cross-team collaboration.
High degree of organisation, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
Experience with marine survey systems (ROVs, AUVs, sonar systems) is an asset.
Experience designing for harsh subsea environments is considered an advantage.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership is preferred.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Experience with the following would be considered an asset:
Experience with SolidWorks PDM including approval workflows, version control, and data structure management.
Familiarity with GD&T principles and best practices.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications (Excel, Word, Teams, SharePoint).
Knowledge of materials selection, corrosion prevention, and subsea design considerations.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
* This role may involve limited travel and occasional offshore or site-based activities. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United Kingdom.
