We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mortgage Underwriter to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mortgages and financial services, with a focus on risk analysis and quantitative analysis. This role is critical in evaluating mortgage applications, ensuring compliance with lending policies, and making informed decisions that align with our organisational goals.
Primary Responsibilities
Review and sign off binding offers and pay outs in line with appropriate mandate requirements whilst ensuring all affordability and underwriting measures are met.
To assist and support the Underwriting Manager with ad hoc tasks such as process improvement, preparation and development of MI and one-off pieces of work and projects.
To deputise for the Underwriting Manager during his absence.
To be actively involved in the training, development and coaching of underwriting and administration colleagues.
To be responsible for assessing new mortgage applications as submitted through various different distribution channels including brokers, introducers, and through our direct to consumer online proposition.
To support the sales team and brokers with referrals on lending criteria and the suitability of products prior to application.
To act upon and fulfil automated underwriting decisions and to complete manual income and expenditure underwriting checks specifically on value-added/high risk elements of the process, to ensure mortgage applications are accurately assessed before binding offer issuance and completion.
To work with introducing brokers by phone and email in order to build sustainable and productive relationships.
Make lending decisions in line with our Credit Risk Policy, Responsible Lending Manual and individual mandate levels.
To conduct verification checks of ID, employment and property security within the documented processes to ensure that loans are advanced within the company's credit risk appetite.
To work in accordance with relevant suitability and affordability guidelines, and to raise any necessary issues of concern to line management.
To complete various incoming and outgoing client and third party contacts, including correspondence via telephone, email and letter ensuring good outcomes are delivered consistently.
To complete work within agreed qualitative and quantitative service level standards, with a customer service focus.
To meet pre-set role objectives including a variety of individual, team and department performance measures.
To follow documented best practice processes through all work undertaken.
Adhere to internal underwriting policy and regulatory requirements of the FCA, Money Laundering, Prevention of Financial Crime, General Data Protection Regulations and Consumer Duty.
To manage, lead and support "mini teams" to ensure all underwriting requirements and audit standards are met.
To complete monthly reviews with a view to documenting monthly performance and achievements.
